Advertising with us

RTD JOURNAL is free to read and paid for by advertising, so advertisers are welcome and important to us. This page says what we sell, how we sell it, and, just as usefully, what we will not do for money. If you are considering advertising here, reading it first will save both of us time.

We are an independent general-news publication with readers across business, the economy, entertainment, health, politics, science, sports, technology, and world affairs. That is a broad, engaged audience, and it is an audience that stays because we do not treat it as inventory to be squeezed. Protecting that trust is also how we protect the value of your advertisement.

What we offer

Most of our advertising is programmatic display, filled through the open exchanges, and for many buyers that is the simplest way to reach our readers. We also sell a limited amount of space directly, and we offer clearly labelled sponsored content and newsletter placements for advertisers who want something more considered than a banner.

Direct and sponsored arrangements are handled case by case, because a small site cannot pretend to a rate card built for a network. Tell us what you are trying to achieve and we will tell you honestly whether we can do it well, and whether our audience is the right one for it, rather than sell you a placement that will not work.

Sponsored content is always labelled

We will run sponsored content, and it will always be marked as sponsored, in plain language, at the top, where a reader sees it before they read a word. We do not disguise advertising as journalism, and we will not accept a placement whose whole value depends on readers mistaking it for our independent reporting. That is not caution, it is the entire basis on which our audience is worth reaching.

Sponsored material still has to be lawful, honest, and not misleading, and we can decline or ask for changes to copy that is not. The relationship between advertising and the newsroom, and the wall between them, is described in our ownership and funding page.

What we will not accept

Some things are not for sale here, whatever the budget. We refuse advertising that is deceptive, that promotes scams, fake investments, or miracle cures, or that makes health or financial claims we would not let past in a story.

  • Political advertising that hides who is paying for it, and any placement designed to look like independent coverage of a campaign.
  • Anything targeting children, or creative that has no business appearing next to news.
  • Fraudulent products, deceptive downloads, malware, and the tangle of ad-tech tricks that carry them.
  • Advertising that is discriminatory, that incites hatred, or that would be unlawful where our readers are.
  • Adult content, and other categories a general-news site sitting next to serious stories should not carry.

We would rather leave the space empty than fill it with something that costs us a reader’s trust. On our own affiliate and disclosure practices, see our ownership and funding page.

Advertising does not buy coverage

This is the part that matters most, so we will be blunt about it. Buying advertising here buys advertising, and nothing else. It does not buy a favourable story, a soft interview, advance sight of coverage, or protection from it. If your company becomes the subject of a story, the fact that you advertise with us will not change a word of it, except that the story will disclose the relationship.

We do not let advertisers preview or approve editorial content, we do not pull accurate stories because a buyer is unhappy, and a request to do so may itself become something we report. Our corrections policy refuses takedowns of accurate coverage from advertisers by name, and our editorial standards explains how independence is arranged rather than merely asserted.

Standards, and getting in touch

Advertisers are responsible for their own claims and for holding the rights to the creative they run, and we expect advertising to meet the ordinary standards of honesty and legality that apply where our readers are. We can remove any advertisement, at any time, that breaches these terms or generates serious complaints, and repeated breaches end the relationship.

To discuss advertising, sponsorship, or a partnership, write to support@rtdjournal.com with ADVERTISING at the front of the subject line, and tell us what you have in mind: the product, the goal, the rough scale, and any timing. Enquiries are handled on the business side, not by the desk that would cover you, and other ways to reach us are on our contact page.
