What this site is, and what it is not

RTD JOURNAL publishes journalism for general information. We report what happened, who said it, and where the document came from. Nobody reads a disclaimer for pleasure and we have not tried to make this one enjoyable, but the distinction it draws is one our readers act on, so it is worth setting out properly.

Nothing here is professional advice. A story about a court ruling is not legal advice about your situation. A story about a company’s results is not a recommendation to buy or sell anything. Coverage of a health study is not a diagnosis or a treatment plan, and coverage of a new rule is not guidance on how it applies to your particular case. For that you need a professional who can look at your facts, and this site is not a substitute for one.

News changes, and changes fast

The single most important thing to understand about any news site is that a story is accurate as far as we can tell at the moment we publish it, and the world does not stop moving to keep it true. Figures get revised. Officials correct themselves. An early casualty count, an early cause, an early attribution of blame: these are the parts of a breaking story most likely to change, and we would be doing you a disservice to pretend otherwise.

We date our stories and we update them as things develop. When we change something because it was wrong, we say so rather than edit silently, and the mechanics of that are in our corrections policy. If you are reading an older piece, read it as a snapshot of what was known then, not as a live account of what is true now.

External links and other people’s content

We link out to documents, data, and other coverage all the time, because showing our work matters more than looking self-contained. Those destinations are not ours and we do not control them. A link means we thought it was worth your time when we placed it, not that we vouch for everything on the far end, or that it still says what it said when we linked to it.

The same applies to advertising and to any material a reader submits. Advertisements are mostly selected and served by third parties, and their presence is not an endorsement by us, a point our advertise page makes plainly.

Quotes, forecasts, and the limits of certainty

When we quote someone, we are reporting that they said it, not certifying that what they said is true. A minister’s claim, a company’s statement, an analyst’s forecast: our job is to attribute it accurately and, where we can, to test it, which our fact-checking policy describes. It is not to guarantee that a prediction comes to pass or that a source told us the whole truth.

Numbers deserve particular caution. Early tallies, preliminary estimates, and projections are exactly that, and we try to label them so. Treat a range as a range and a forecast as a forecast, whoever is offering it and however confidently.

Using what you read here

By all means be informed by our reporting. Just do not treat it as the final word on a decision that carries real consequences for your money, your health, your legal position, or your safety. Check the primary source we point to, seek advice suited to your own circumstances, and where a story itself tells you to confirm something with an official body before acting, do that.

To the extent the law allows, we are not responsible for losses that follow from relying on our content as though it were advice tailored to you. That is not a shrug about accuracy. We correct our mistakes in the open. It is a limit on being treated as your adviser, which we are not and have never claimed to be.
