Jordan’s No Obvious Picks Rule Meets Fourth Wing Fancasts
Prime Video ordered Fourth Wing in May, still named no one, and Michael B. Jordan already banned the obvious faces fans keep pitching.
Prime Video still has no Fourth Wing cast, four months after ordering the series on May 11, 2026. Michael B. Jordan already told fans the famous faces they keep pitching are the ones he does not want.
Amazon MGM Studios ordered Fourth Wing to series at the Beacon Theatre upfront, with Jordan’s Outlier Society producing Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean books. The call sheet is still blank. The fandom is not.
An Empty Call Sheet After the Series Order
The show follows 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail, forced by her mother into Basgiath War College to train as a dragon rider, and into the orbit of wingleader Xaden Riorson. Prime Video will stream it in more than 240 countries and territories. Meredith Averill is adapting it and will run the writers’ room. Lisa Joy will direct the pilot.
Yarros is an executive producer, as are Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo for Outlier Society, Jonathan Nolan, Joy, and Athena Wickham for Kilter Films, and Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark for Premeditated Productions, the sister company of publisher Entangled. If the first season works, the plan is to take the rest of the five-book run across multiple seasons. Three novels are out. Two are still unwritten.
What has not arrived is a single actor. Prime Video’s own series page still lists cast, crew, and a release timeline as items to come. That vacuum is doing more work than a teaser would. Readers have spent three years assigning faces, and the production has spent those same years refusing to bless them.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The order: Prime Video picked up Fourth Wing on May 11, 2026, after a heated rights auction around the first novel’s May 2023 release.
- The room: Averill is showrunner, Joy directs the first episode, and Yarros is in the producer credits.
- The names: No actor has been announced for Violet, Xaden, the dragons, or anyone else.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The leads: Who plays Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson remains unannounced.
- The window: There is no premiere date and no public start of production.
- Jordan on camera: Asked if he might appear, he said, “I don’t know.”
The empty sheet is not a stall in public. It is the first creative choice the audience can see.
Jordan Told Fans to Drop the Faces They Already Picked
On February 11, 2026, months before the order, Jordan sat for a BBC interview at the Academy Awards luncheon and drew a hard line around casting. He wants a mix of new faces and known names. He does not want a lineup people already associate with other roles.
It allows people to, like, fall in love with the characters that they have imagined in their head without any baggage, with projecting their own feelings on certain casts. So just know, it’s nothing cheesy coming out. It ain’t no obvious choices. I think it’s going to be something that feels honest.
Michael B. Jordan, executive producer, to the BBC
“When it’s done the right way, I think you can have a nice balance where casting won’t be distracting,” he said. The Empyrean books, he noted, have sold millions of copies in 40 languages, which is enough bodies on screen that the production can go deep without hanging the whole story on one star.
That rule collides with how this fandom works. Readers did not wait for a call sheet. They built one. Lookalike Xadens from other book-to-screen romances keep getting dropped into the slot. Violet gets the same treatment. Casting, for this audience, is the show. A wrong pair ends the argument before a dragon appears.
At the upfront Jordan put it more simply. “This project required the right creative partner.” Joy, standing with him, said they were building a cinematic world meant “to deliver the series this fandom deserves.” The fandom heard a promise. He had already told them the faces in their mood boards were the problem.
Lena Headey as General Sorrengail Fits the Ban
The lists that fill the gap keep proving his point. One widely circulated roster of 15 “perfect” names leans on famous voices, action CVs, and, in one case, the exact word he used.
FAN PICKS THAT FAIL JORDAN’S TEST
| Role | Fan pick | Why it collides |
|---|---|---|
| General Sorrengail | Lena Headey | The write-up calls her “the most obvious pick,” after Cersei Lannister. |
| Tairn (voice) | Idris Elba | A famous, commanding voice mapped onto the ancient battle dragon. |
| Andarna (voice) | Madelaine Petsch | A known TV face pitched for Violet’s young gold dragon. |
| Rhiannon Matthias | Ella Balinska | An action-star mapping for the cadet who drills Violet in hand-to-hand. |
| Jack Barlowe | Stephen Kalyn | Cast because he “fits the description to a T.” |
Headey as the hard, cunning commanding general is the cleanest example. The comparison is Cersei, which is the baggage Jordan said he wants off the screen. Elba as Tairn is the same move in a different register: take the most recognizable voice in the room and park it inside the oldest dragon. Kalyn as Jack is casting by hair color and build. That is projection, not a part.
Other names on that list are closer to what Jordan described, younger actors with less residue, Abbie Hern for Imogen, Nicholas Duvernay for Ridoc, Samuel Braun for Dain. Even those pitches still treat the books as a costume fitting. Lioness actor Laysla De Oliveira has said she wants Mira Sorrengail, Violet’s older sister, which at least comes from a performer rather than a mood board. It is still a volunteer for a role that has not been offered.
The production can hire famous people. Jordan said so. What he ruled out is the mapping itself, the habit of seeing a character and reaching for the last person who played someone like them.
Who Is Making Fourth Wing After Two Showrunners Left?
The series order in May looked sudden only if you ignored the three years under it. Amazon MGM and Outlier Society took the rights in a heated auction around Fourth Wing’s May 2023 debut, then put the project into development that October. The first public showrunner was Moira Walley-Beckett, the Breaking Bad writer who created Anne With an E. She signed on in summer 2024 and was gone by June 2025.
Averill took over in September 2025. Amazon’s own announcement credits her for The Haunting of Hill House and Locke & Key. She also worked as an executive producer on Wednesday season 2. She wrote the adaptation that Prime Video ordered. Kilter Films, which made Westworld and Fallout, came in with her, and Joy took the pilot.
The emotional stakes are sky high, the battles are epic, power dynamics are thrilling, and underneath it is so much humor and heart and a romance that will consume you.

Yarros stood with them at the Beacon Theatre and said, “These are the people who understand that a story means to its readers, and they’re passionate about the book, which is why I trust them completely.” Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, called it one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world and said the team would honor what fans love about the story. Honor, in this case, includes not handing them the cast they already drew.
THE ROAD TO A SERIES ORDER
- May 2023: Fourth Wing is published. Amazon MGM and Outlier Society take the rights after a heated auction.
- October 2023: The TV version goes into development at the studio.
- November 2023: Iron Flame, the second Empyrean novel, is published.
- Summer 2024: Moira Walley-Beckett joins as showrunner.
- June 2025: Walley-Beckett exits.
- September 2025: Meredith Averill takes over as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
- February 11, 2026: Jordan tells the BBC there will be no obvious choices.
- May 11, 2026: Prime Video orders the series. Joy will direct the pilot.
Premeditated’s presence matters for a different reason. Pelletier is Entangled’s CEO. The publisher is in the producers’ room, which is unusual for a book-to-screen deal of this size and useful if anyone starts rewriting the romance that sold the rights.
2.7 Million Copies in Seven Days
Amazon did not buy a cult novel. It bought a sales record. Onyx Storm, the third Empyrean book, sold 2.7 million copies in its first week, according to Entangled. Print sales alone cleared a million. Circana Bookscan, which has tracked print since 2004, called it the fastest-selling adult title in the service’s history.
By early 2025 the first three novels had sold more than 12 million editions in the United States, Entangled said. Yarros held the top three spots on the New York Times hardcover list at once. The series is planned for five books. Fourth Wing arrived in May 2023, Iron Flame that November, Onyx Storm in 2025. Book Four is still ahead.
THE EMPYREAN SALES THAT BOUGHT THE SHOW
- 2.7 million: Onyx Storm copies in week one, per Entangled, all formats.
- 12 million: U.S. editions of the first three novels by early 2025, per Entangled.
- Five books: The Empyrean run Yarros has said she will write.
- 40 languages: The range Jordan cited when Outlier took the rights with Amazon.
That is why the empty call sheet is so loud. The people who made those numbers already know what Violet looks like, what Xaden’s voice does, how Tairn should sound. Friedlander talked about honoring that passion. Jordan talked about stripping the famous faces off it. Both things can be true in a press room. They cannot both win a first episode.
The Graphic Novel Will Freeze Violet First
While the TV series waits on names, Yarros is locking a look in another medium. Ten Speed Graphic will publish Fourth Wing, The Graphic Novel: Volume One on April 6, 2027, adapted by Yarros and illustrated by Italian artist Anabel Rossi, who also works as Mayet. The first volume is a graphic novel covering chapters 1 through 22, the first half of the book. A second volume is planned for the rest, then paired volumes for Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, with more books meant to cover the rest of the series.
Yarros said she was in proofs and “obsessed with watching this world come to life in this new medium.” She also said fans sold out a signed deluxe edition on Amazon before a cover had been shown. The story inside is the same across editions. The covers are not.
GRAPHIC NOVEL EDITIONS FOR VOLUME ONE
- Main edition: Hardcover, paperback, and ebook from Ten Speed Graphic, on sale April 6, 2027.
- Target: Exclusive hardcover with its own cover, ISBN 9798217276837.
- Barnes & Noble: Exclusive hardcover with a different cover, ISBN 9798217276844.
- Books-A-Million and Indigo: Exclusive paperback, ISBN 9798217276851.
- Walmart: Paperback that shares the main cover and adds a bookmark, ISBN 9798217276974.
That book will be in stores months before anyone has to admit who is wearing Violet’s flight leathers on Prime Video. Rossi’s Violet will be the first official face a lot of readers see, drawn under Yarros’s own script. Jordan can still keep famous actors off the call sheet. He cannot keep a face from reaching the audience first.
Threshing Day Arrived Without a Cast List
The newest Empyrean book is already out, and it still does not tell anyone who is on the show. Threshing Day, a companion collection, went on sale September 29, 2026. It is not Book Four. It gathers thirteen stories from Basgiath, each one a rider’s Threshing, the day a dragon chooses them or they die. Xaden’s is in it. So are Ridoc, Imogen, Sawyer, Dain, and others the TV series will have to cast if it runs.
The collection thickens the bench the show has not hired. Every new point of view is another role that will have to be a person, not a fancast. It also feeds the same hunger the empty sheet created. Readers got more of Xaden on the page the same month they were still waiting for a face.
Jordan can hold the line he drew in February. Averill can write the version she sold in May. Rossi can draw Violet into stores next April. None of that names the 20-year-old who has to walk the parapet on camera. Until that happens, the Empyrean series Prime Video ordered is a set of books, a producer’s rule, and a blank name tape.
