Onwenu’s Broken Ankle Turns a Pay Cut Into Dead Money

Mike Onwenu’s broken right ankle hits in the walk year he reworked for $8.95 million guaranteed.

Initial X-rays showed Patriots right guard Mike Onwenu has a broken right ankle after T.J. Watt landed on his legs in New England’s 20-3 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday. He was carted off late in the first quarter of his 100th regular-season game, then ruled out. In May he had taken a reworked deal that cut his cap charge by $7.5 million in the last year of his contract.

Insider Jordan Schultz had already said the leg injury was feared to be season-ending. The club has not confirmed surgery or posted him on injured reserve. The money, though, is already on the books.

Watt Landed on the Back of His Legs

Mike Reiss, citing a source, said the break came on a sack of Drake Maye, when Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt landed on the back of Onwenu’s legs. Onwenu stayed down, got help to a cart, and put no weight on the right side. Coach Mike Vrabel said after the game he had no updates.

The replay is ugly enough that X-rays felt like paperwork. Watt was chasing Maye, not squaring up to cut a lineman. The outcome is still a starting guard with a broken ankle. Calling it dirty is a harder claim than the clip supports.

It is heartbreaking when you see a guy like Mike, who has played through injuries, been here since he was a rookie… he is just gritty. He leaves it all out there.

Drake Maye, Patriots quarterback

Onwenu, 28, is a 6-foot-3, 350-pound Michigan product and a 2020 sixth-round pick, No. 182 overall. He is in his seventh season, all with New England, and Reiss noted he now has the longest tenure on the roster. He also has five postseason games, four of them starts, including Super Bowl LX last season.

Sunday’s win was not a clean bill of health. Right tackle Morgan Moses called Onwenu dominant and said the room would do anything for him. Losing a player of that caliber, Moses said, is hard.

THE INJURY PILE ON SUNDAY

  1. September 12, 2026: Wide receiver A.J. Brown is placed on injured reserve after Week 1.
  2. September 20, late first quarter: Onwenu is carted off with a right ankle injury and ruled out.
  3. September 20, second quarter: Outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones leaves with a shoulder injury and is later ruled out.
  4. September 20, second half: Tight end Eli Raridon (thigh) and safeties Dell Pettus (ankle) and Craig Woodson (shoulder) are also ruled out.
  5. September 20, evening: Initial X-rays show Onwenu’s broken right ankle.

New England is 1-1. The offensive line that just got Maye through a 20-3 home opener is already being rebuilt on the fly.

The May Restructure Still Counts $17.5 Million

Onwenu signed a three-year, $57 million extension on March 11, 2024, with $36.5 million guaranteed. The final year had no remaining guarantees. On May 28 he signed a one-year, $10 million rewrite. Over The Cap’s ledger shows his pay reduced by $7.5 million against the cap, from $25 million to $17.5 million, in return for $8.95 million newly guaranteed.

That $8.95 million is the $6 million signing bonus plus his $2.95 million base salary. Cash due this season is $10 million. The cap number is the old $7.5 million bonus proration stacked on a new $6 million proration, plus $850,000 in per-game roster money and a $200,000 workout bonus.

ONWENU’S 2026 CONTRACT, BEFORE AND AFTER MAY

Item Old 2026 year Reworked year
Cap charge $25 million $17.5 million
Cash due $17.5 million $10 million
Guaranteed for 2026 $0 left $8.95 million
Base salary $16 million $2.95 million

Spotrac still carries $16,657,820 in dead cap if New England tried to move on. The May rewrite made him cheaper to keep and, on paper, easier to trade. A broken ankle in Week 2 wipes out that second path. The Patriots are expected to put him on injured reserve and add a body. They will still be paying a starter’s cap number for a player who cannot line up.

Greg Van Roten Is the Next Right Guard

With Walter Rouse inactive, the Patriots turned to Greg Van Roten, the 36-year-old interior lineman they signed veteran OL Greg Van Roten to a one-year, $3 million deal on August 18. The club listed him at 6-3 and 305 pounds, a Pennsylvania product who entered the NFL as a Packers rookie free agent in 2012.

WHAT VAN ROTEN BRINGS IN

  • The résumé: 144 regular-season games and 105 starts, including 75 at right guard, 27 at left guard, and three at center.
  • Last season: He started all 17 games at right guard for the New York Giants.
  • The stops: Green Bay, Carolina, the Jets, Buffalo, Las Vegas, and the Giants, plus two CFL seasons with Toronto.

He is a known quantity, which is the polite way of saying he is not Onwenu. New England can also mix in Ben Brown as an interior swing and, if needed, kick rookie tackle Caleb Lomu inside. None of those options was the plan when the club paid Onwenu to stay put through 2026.

Maye’s Top Pass Blocker Lasted One Quarter

Pro Football Focus’s Week 1 file is the last clean snapshot. Onwenu played 71 offensive snaps against Seattle and posted a 75.7 overall grade, 11th among 63 qualified guards. His 88.9 pass-blocking grade ranked first among 63 qualified guards, with zero pressures, sacks, or hits allowed. The run-blocking grade sat at 66.8, 23rd at the position, on 27 run snaps against 44 in pass protection.

ONWENU THROUGH WEEK 1

  • Overall grade: 75.7, 11th of 63 guards.
  • Pass block: 88.9, with 0 pressures allowed.
  • Run block: 66.8, 23rd at the position.
  • Snaps: 71 on offense, 0 penalties.

That is the player Maye just lost on the right side. In 2025 Onwenu started all 17 games. Durability was the calling card until Watt came in from behind. A broken ankle for a 350-pound guard is not a two-week problem. Schultz’s season-ending fear matches how these injuries usually run, even before the team says so.

The Line Was Built With Him in the Middle

Staff writer Evan Lazar laid out the starting five along the offensive line in July as left tackle Will Campbell, left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, center Jared Wilson, Onwenu, and right tackle Morgan Moses. Vera-Tucker’s signing let Wilson slide to his college position. Onwenu and Moses, 35, were the veterans holding the right side.

The same snapshot was honest about the rest. Vera-Tucker has sat out 42 games and started 43, and he missed all of 2025 with a torn triceps. Campbell, the No. 4 pick in 2025, graded 71.4 before an MCL injury in Week 12, then 50.1 in the playoffs. The postseason run to Super Bowl LX showed the line still had work to do against the league’s best fronts. New England answered by adding Vera-Tucker and drafting Lomu 28th overall. It did not answer by replacing Onwenu.

PFF had the group 11th in its Week 1 offensive line rankings, with all five starters above a 90 percent pass-block win rate and all five under a 70 run-blocking grade. The pass protection was the selling point. The right guard who led that file is now on a cart.

2027 Free Agency Now Starts on a Broken Ankle

Onwenu is slated to be an unrestricted free agent in 2027. The May rewrite was a one-year stay, not an extension, after New England had already invested in Vera-Tucker. He took less cash to lock down $8.95 million. Two games later, that security is medical leave.

If this is his last snap in a Patriots uniform, it will have come in a 20-3 win, on his 100th regular-season game, with a $17.5 million cap number still ticking. Van Roten will start the next one. Maye will throw with a different man on his right. The market Onwenu was playing toward just got a lot quieter.
