Arkane Lyon’s Union Holds the Clock Microsoft Cannot Skip

French unions, Florange law, and a nearly finished Marvel’s Blade game now sit between Microsoft and a shutdown of Arkane Lyon.

Arkane Lyon has until November 13 for works council talks to end, with 217 jobs tied to whether Microsoft finds a buyer for the Dishonored studio. Unions say redundancy talks are going badly, and the team is still finishing Marvel’s Blade.

Xbox already listed the Lyon studio among the teams it wanted off its books in July. French law, the works council, and a Marvel license now decide how far that wish can go.

What the November 13 Deadline Decides

Friday, November 13 is the date set for consultation with Arkane’s Social and Economic Committee to end. It is the point at which Microsoft is due to decide, not a padlock on the door that day. An internal calendar described to the French press puts any full stop on operations from late 2026 into the first quarter of 2027.

Staff were told on July 16, ten days after Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s memo, that Microsoft wanted the studio shut. On July 24, Arkane and Printemps Écologique, the only representative union, signed a method agreement that spells out “the project of total and definitive cessation of the company’s activities,” including economic dismissal of all staff. That text went onto France’s Legifrance register on August 10.

Redundancy talks on the employment protection plan, the PSE, are scheduled to stop on Friday, October 30. Printemps Écologique has asked to move both that date and the buyer-search timetable so the talks have more room. A union representative said the exact date is still being negotiated.

THE CLOSURE CALENDAR IN LYON

  1. July 6, 2026: Sharma tells Xbox staff the company will cut about 3,200 roles through FY27, with about 1,600 eliminated that day, and that Arkane is opening required talks with its works council.
  2. July 16, 2026: Management tells Lyon staff Microsoft wants the studio closed, putting 217 jobs at risk.
  3. July 24, 2026: Arkane and Printemps Écologique sign the method agreement that maps a full cessation and collective economic dismissals.
  4. August 10, 2026: The agreement is posted on Legifrance.
  5. Friday, October 30, 2026: PSE talks are due to end unless the union wins a delay.
  6. Friday, November 13, 2026: Works council consultation is due to end, the date Microsoft is expected to decide.
  7. Late 2026 into Q1 2027: Internal papers schedule a start to winding the company down, if the closure is confirmed.

Microsoft has not announced a shutdown. In a note to the French press it said it was still exploring “different options for Arkane,” while “actively looking for a partner to support the next phase of development and enable the commercialization of the project.”

Printemps Écologique Can Still Take Microsoft to Court

The party with a clock Microsoft cannot skip is the union, backed by the Florange rules written into the labor code in 2014. Groups of at least 1,000 staff that plan to close a site and cut jobs on this scale search for a buyer before it can close. The employer has to tell potential buyers it wants to sell, put a presentation pack together at once, open the books that candidates need, study every offer, and send a reasoned reply to each one.

WHAT FRENCH LAW MAKES MICROSOFT DO

  • Tell the market: Inform potential buyers, by any fitting means, that it intends to sell the establishment.
  • The pack: Produce a presentation document for those buyers without delay.
  • The files: Give candidates the information they need, minus anything that would harm the wider company, under a confidentiality duty.
  • The offers: Examine every takeover bid it receives.
  • The answers: Send a reasoned reply to each bid inside the legal timetable.

Printemps Écologique’s delegate, identified only as Simon, told the French press the redundancy talks are going badly and that Microsoft is not leaving the representatives a real choice. He said Microsoft is leaving while the studio is healthy, to cut costs and lift short-term returns on its bets, a line he said clashes with years of works-council briefings on the company’s finances. His union has not ruled out challenging the economic motive in court after October 30.

The Syndicat des travailleurs et travailleuses du jeu vidéo, present in the studio without elected seats, asked how Microsoft could justify the plan when its annual net profits run to hundreds of billions of dollars. Microsoft’s results for the year that ended in June 2026 showed $133.7 billion in net income. STJV said that if talks do not move, it will keep raising the pressure, including with strikes. Arkane staff already struck in May over remote work, on May 28, after the union called a day of action against a policy the company had imposed.

Several forms of takeover are under consideration, the union said. If the site still closes, Printemps Écologique wants internal rehiring across Microsoft, paid reclassification leave, and a PSE built for a games job market it describes as extremely thin.

Marvel’s Blade Is the Asset on the Table

The product a buyer would actually be pricing is Marvel’s Blade. Bethesda and Arkane Lyon announced it in December 2023 as a mature, single-player, third-person game set in Paris, in collaboration with Marvel Games. Work on it has been underway since 2022. Printemps Écologique’s official said production is “rather near the end.”

would be a monumental waste

STJV said it was proud of the work done and believes the game would succeed if it shipped. Microsoft’s own wording is cooler. It is hunting a partner for the next phase of development and for getting the project on sale, which is a later stage than “production is done.” Those two accounts can both be true. They also leave a buyer guessing how much money is still required.

Outside that trailer and a handful of concept images, Microsoft has shown almost none of the game. That silence is doing as much work as the union’s late-production claim. A bidder has to decide whether it is buying a nearly finished Marvel title or a pitch that has been dark for three years. The character is stuck on the film side too, which makes shelving a late studio build a stranger choice if the union is right about the schedule.

Why Arkane Cannot Copy Double Fine’s Exit

Double Fine and Compulsion left Xbox with their games. Arkane’s live project is a Marvel license, so a spin-out cannot pick up Blade the way Tim Schafer’s studio picked up its catalog. Sharma’s July memo was blunt about the split. Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions would “return to management and transition to independent studios with their IP, catalog, and runway for their next games.” Compulsion kept Contrast, We Happy Few, and South of Midnight. Double Fine said Xbox had worked with it on an outcome that “returns ownership of our games to us” after seven years inside the company.

Undead Labs later said it had finished its split and is now an independent, employee-owned studio, with State of Decay 3 still in development, due on Game Pass on day one under a new publisher, and also headed to PlayStation 5 and PC. That path still cost jobs. The studio said it was saying goodbye to a large number of colleagues in order to stand on its own.

Arkane does not get that package on Blade. Dishonored and Deathloop sit with ZeniMax, which Microsoft bought in 2021. Blade belongs to Marvel. Microsoft is not offering Lyon a clean walk with the current game. It is offering, in public, a partner who might fund the last stretch and put the game on sale. That is a different deal from the one Double Fine signed.

THE FIVE STUDIOS XBOX PUT ON THE TABLE IN JULY

Studio Country What moved with them Status
Double Fine Productions United States IP, catalog, runway Independent again
Compulsion Games Canada Contrast, We Happy Few, South of Midnight Independent again
Undead Labs United States State of Decay 3, new publisher, Game Pass day one Independent, employee-owned
Ninja Theory United Kingdom Two sale agreements collapsed Closure consultation
Arkane Lyon France Marvel’s Blade is licensed; older Arkane games stay with ZeniMax Buyer search, 217 jobs

Sharma’s memo also said none of Xbox’s publicly announced first-party games were being cancelled in those July cuts. Blade had been public since 2023. The later Lyon paperwork treats the studio as a candidate for a full stop anyway.

Ninja Theory Already Lost Two Buyers

The British comparison is already on the board. In July, Sharma said Ninja Theory and Undead Labs had “entered terms to join new ownership with funding to complete and grow Senua and State of Decay 3.” Senua, the next Hellblade game, had been shown at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7. By late September, Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty said two separate agreements for Ninja Theory had fallen through. The company would begin consultation on a proposed closure while it kept looking at other paths.

Lyon is still inside a French buyer-search Microsoft has to run. Ninja Theory, after those two collapsed deals, was already in closure talks. That is why the union’s court threat and the request for more time are not atmosphere. They are the tools Austin never had when Arkane’s Texas studio, opened in 2006, was shut in 2024 after Redfall in 2023, and the tools Cambridge could not use once the buyers walked.

The Lyon studio is 27 years into its run. Arx Fatalis came out in 2002, then Dark Messiah of Might and Magic in 2006 and KarmaStar in 2009, before Dishonored and Deathloop made its name. A buyer is not purchasing that history as a gift. It is purchasing a team, a French legal process, and a Marvel contract Microsoft still holds.

Filed Paperwork Already Maps a Full Stop

Microsoft’s public line and the papers already on file do not say the same thing. The company says it is exploring options and hunting a partner for Blade. The July 24 method agreement describes a total and definitive end to the company’s activity. A later internal document, out since September, schedules that wind-down from the end of 2026 through the first quarter of 2027. When the French press asked Microsoft about that calendar, it did not answer.

In September, after 268 more Xbox roles were cut, the company still said talks with Arkane would run through the end of the year. That broader window and the November 13 works council date can both be right. Consultation has a stop date. Finding a partner can run past it. Confirming a closure can too.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The legal clock: Works council consultation is due to end November 13, and PSE talks on October 30, unless the union wins a delay.
  • The headcount: 217 jobs are named in the closure plan described to staff and in the method agreement.
  • The game: The union says Blade is near the end of production; Microsoft says it wants a partner for the next phase and for putting the game on sale.
  • The other studios: Double Fine, Compulsion, and Undead Labs have left as independents; Ninja Theory’s two sales failed.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • A named buyer: Several forms of takeover are under consideration; no bidder has been identified in public.
  • A shutdown date: Microsoft has not confirmed closure, and the late-2026 to Q1 2027 calendar is still a project under procedure.
  • Blade’s ship window: No public release date has been set, and Microsoft has shown almost no new footage since 2023.

Games reporter Jason Schreier, writing as the French report landed, said his understanding was that several paths that would save Arkane Lyon were in play.

Anything can happen during negotiations, but at this point I’d be surprised if the studio is shut down.

Jason Schreier, games reporter, on Bluesky

That reading sits next to a method agreement that already describes a full stop. Both can be on the table at once. A surprise shutdown would still match the paperwork. A sale would have to overwrite it.

Rehiring Inside Xbox Is the Union Fallback

If no buyer lands, Printemps Écologique’s fallback is not a plaque on the Lyon wall. It wants the 217 people rehired inside other Microsoft studios, plus paid time to retrain or look, in a games market it says offers almost no second chances. It also wants the right to fight the economic motive in court, using the claim that the studio is healthy and that the cut is a short-term return play.

Sharma’s July memo is the document that put Lyon on this path. She called the move the most significant restructure in Xbox history, said the business was not healthy, and wrote that in a typical year Xbox lost 64 cents for every dollar it invested in its expanded studio slate. She also said work in some parts of the company passed through as many as 14 layers of management, and that platform teams were 40% larger than at the start of the generation even as the player base shrank.

On November 13 the works council clock is due to stop. The method agreement, the internal wind-down calendar, the Marvel license, and the union’s court threat all keep running after that date.

Annual reports are read to the footnotes, court filings to the exhibits, government releases to the methodology section, because that is where the numbers that matter usually sit. Each figure that reaches the page is checked against the document it came from, and claims that cannot be tied to a primary source are left out. That approach runs across the site's ten sections, written for an international readership: news, business and technology on one side, science, sports, entertainment, travel, lifestyle, gaming and auto on the other, all held to the same standard of evidence.
