Ozzy Osbourne Bet His Last Weeks on One Birmingham Night

Jack Osbourne says Ozzy Osbourne took his Birmingham farewell against doctors’ orders, spending his last energy on a show he died 17 days after.

Jack Osbourne said doctors told Ozzy Osbourne not to play his farewell show, citing the energy it would take from a failing body. The Black Sabbath singer did it anyway on July 5, 2025, in Birmingham, and died 17 days later, on July 22, at 76.

Jack’s answer from his father was three words: “I’m doing it.” He said that in an interview released Oct. 20, 2026, and he also said he is not angry.

Jack Osbourne Confirms His Father Took the Risk

Jack described a run of medical trouble in the weeks before Back to the Beginning, the sold-out day at Villa Park. Doctors, he said, kept returning to the same point: Ozzy had too much going on, and the cost of standing up a stadium night would be the energy he did not have to spend.

“They basically were just saying like you’ve got so many things going on,” Jack said. “We recommend you don’t do this because the energy expenditure.” He added that there was “something with his heart and he had some like artery stuff going on,” plus “a ton of medical kind of mishaps leading up to the show.”

They were just like energetically, this is going to … this is not good. This is not good. Like you don’t have it in you.

The remaining time was the currency. Ozzy spent it on one night in the city where the band started, and the family is now saying that was the deal. Jack called himself deeply heartbroken and then said everyone wants some say in how they go. “He went the way he wanted to.”

Six Doctors Came to the House

Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy’s wife and manager, had already put a fuller file on the record on Oct. 13, 2026, ahead of the concert film. He was in hospital in America before the family moved back to England. English doctors would not work from the American notes. They kept him in hospital for a week, then asked for a meeting at the house.

“We had six different doctors and, like, a quarterback, because there were all of these specialists for the heart, for Parkinson’s, for his lungs, because of all the different things that were wrong with him,” she said. Their verdict, as she told it, was blunt.

They advised us not to do the show. They said it would kill him. We were all together and Ozzy said, “It’s not an option. It’s what I want.” He said, “I know I’m dying. If I miss a few months of my life, I want to go this way. This is what I want.”

He also asked her what another six months would do for him. That is a different figure from the 17 days he actually had left after the gig; it was the span he said he was willing to trade, not a clock anyone published. Sharon said he had emphysema and “hardly any lungs left,” and that she still does not know how he got through the set. The February 2025 announcement had already framed the night as his final bow, with profits shared equally between three charities.

Sharon’s line on the ending was that he went out like a Viking. Jack’s line is shorter, and it matches: he wanted the journey.

What the Death Certificate Lists

The certificate, filed by his daughter Aimée Osbourne, tracks the same systems the specialists had been called in to watch. It lists an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and an acute myocardial infarction, a heart attack, then names coronary artery disease and Parkinson’s disease with autonomic dysfunction as joint causes. Autonomic dysfunction is a failure in the nerves that help run things the body should do on its own, including blood pressure and heart rate.

Parkinson’s Sharon said a Parkinson’s specialist was in the room Parkinson’s disease with autonomic dysfunction, listed as a joint cause

Thames Valley Air Ambulance said its crew was sent to an incident near Chalfont St. Giles, in Buckinghamshire, on July 22. The family statement that morning said he was with them and “surrounded by love.” A funeral procession moved through Birmingham on July 30.

He Finished the Night on a Black Throne

Back to the Beginning was a 10-hour bill at Villa Park on July 5, 2025, hosted by Jason Momoa, with Tom Morello as musical director. The original Black Sabbath lineup, Ozzy, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, played together for the first time in 20 years. Ozzy first sang a short solo set, then joined the band. He was lifted onstage seated on a black throne with skulls and a bat on top, and he stayed seated.

Cure Parkinson’s said more than 40,000 people attended the sold-out stadium show. He told the crowd it was so good to be on that stage, that they had no idea how he felt, and thank you from the bottom of his heart. Videos from the night show him getting through “Crazy Train” and “Mama I’m Coming Home” without standing.

On the official announcement in February 2025 he had said it was his time to go back to the beginning, and time to give back to the place he was born. “Birmingham is the true home of metal. Birmingham Forever.” Sharon later said she had asked what would really make him happy, and that the only answer was to perform again and say goodbye to his fans.

Ozzy grew up in Aston, less than three miles from Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and his son Louis was treated there. Mark Brider, chief executive of the hospital charity, said Ozzy never forgot those roots.

THE THREE CHARITIES ON THE BILL

  • Cure Parkinson’s: A UK charity that funds work to slow, stop, and reverse Parkinson’s, named as an equal partner on the night.
  • Birmingham Children’s Hospital: The city’s specialist children’s hospital, a past Osbourne cause after Louis’s care there.
  • Acorns Children’s Hospice: A West Midlands hospice for children with complex and life-limiting conditions, also listed as an equal partner.

Iommi later called the day closure, and a good way to go out. Butler called it a wave of love he could almost touch. Ward said he felt at home in a place where he belonged.

Sabbath and the Children Were Not Told

Sharon said the children were not told how sick he was, and that Sabbath was not told either. “My kids didn’t know. We didn’t tell the children. We didn’t tell anyone. But we knew what was going on. Sabbath didn’t know, nothing.” Jack’s interview is the son speaking after that silence, with the medical advice now in his own words.

She said Ozzy spent the hours before his set in the dressing room watching the other bands on a monitor, calling out numbers like a fan. After he came off, he kept repeating the same sentence. “He just kept saying, ‘I did it. I did it.’” The next 17 days, she said, he was elated, after a long stretch of being depressed and down.

Sharon also described the last morning. He woke her about 4:30 a.m., asked her to kiss him and hug him tight, then went downstairs and worked out for 20 minutes. She heard screaming, found people trying to revive him, and told them to leave him, that he was gone. A helicopter still took him toward hospital care. Those were, she said, the last words he spoke to her.

The Farewell Film Opens October 28

Ozzy’s official site posted in September 2026 that Ozzy & Black Sabbath: Back to the Beginning, produced by Mercury Studios and issued by Trafalgar Releasing, would play in cinemas worldwide on October 28 as a limited event. The note calls him a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and frames the picture as the final live performance, shot 17 days before he died.

Sharon has said the film was very hard to watch and also bittersweet. She has not been able to sit through other late-life documentaries, but she did sit through this one. Jack’s interview lands in the same stretch of October as that rollout, filling in the clinical language she had already used: energy, heart, arteries, a father who would not be talked off the stage.

The doctors had told him he did not have it in him. He put what he had left into Villa Park, and for 17 days after that he was, his wife said, happy. The film now puts that night back on a screen.
