Prime’s Fourth Wing Order Rests on Two Unwritten Books

Prime Video ordered Fourth Wing as a five-book Empyrean series, with two novels unwritten, a Wednesday producer in charge, and no cast named.

Prime Video ordered Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing to series on May 11, 2026, as a five-book Empyrean play with two novels still unwritten. Michael B. Jordan announced the pickup onstage at Amazon’s New York upfront, then brought out showrunner Meredith Averill, pilot director Lisa Joy, and Yarros. The streamer still has no cast, no premiere window, and no finished map of the war it just bought.

Threshing Day, a companion collection, went on sale September 29, 2026. It is not Book 4. The TV order is real. The ending of the story it wants to serialize is not.

A Series Order Built on Unfinished Books

Amazon and Jordan’s Outlier Society were already in the mix in December 2022, while Yarros was still in edits and the first novel had not shipped. Fourth Wing arrived in May 2023. Iron Flame followed on Nov. 7, 2023. Onyx Storm landed on January 21, 2025. Yarros has said The Empyrean is planned as five novels. Books 4 and 5 have no titles and no dates.

That is the shape of the bet. Prime did not pick up a closed trilogy. It picked up a war college, a romance, and a publishing calendar that has already slowed. In November 2023, Yarros said she had written about 851,000 words in 15 to 18 months and needed sleep in the plan. Book 4 is the gap the series order cannot fill.

THE EMPYREAN MAP

Title Date What it is
Fourth Wing May 2023 Book 1, the TV starting line
Iron Flame Nov. 7, 2023 Book 2
Onyx Storm January 21, 2025 Book 3, 2.7 million copies in week one
Threshing Day September 29, 2026 13 companion stories, not Book 4
Untitled Book 4 None Mainline novel, still untitled
Untitled Book 5 None Planned finale

Entangled, her publisher, said in January 2025 that the three novels had sold more than 12 million editions in the United States. Onyx Storm’s first week, at more than 2.7 million copies, set a BookScan mark for adult print, with print sales alone above a million, the fastest adult title in the service’s roughly 20-year history. Those figures explain the series order. They do not write Book 4.

Amazon’s Press Release Still Says Romantasy

The horror-showrunner frame is a critic’s gloss. Prime’s own May 11 release ordered Fourth Wing to series as a “romantasy drama,” exclusive in more than 240 countries and territories. The logline is still Basgiath. Graduate or die. Dragons. The story follows 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail after her mother pushes her into the war college that trains Navarre’s riders.

The first sentence of the novel is not a meet-cute. “Conscription Day is always the deadliest.” Readers already know the romance sits inside a school that kills its cadets. Averill does not have to invent darkness. She has to keep the heat that sold the copies.

Violet’s journey in Fourth Wing has sparked a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an intensely passionate fanbase around its world, characters, and emotional stakes. Rebecca Yarros’ brilliant series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world, and with Meredith and our valued partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we’re bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.

Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios, May 11, 2026

Friedlander did not pitch Hill House with dragons. He pitched the fandom. The prestige names are how Prime wants the show sold to advertisers. The press release is how it is still classified on paper.

Averill Already Made a Fandom Show Work

Averill’s folder includes The Haunting of Hill House, where she was an executive producer, and Locke & Key, which she co-created. That is the horror slide in every write-up. Her last major streaming credit before this job was Wednesday season 2, as an executive producer on a goth teen hit built for the same age of fan who turned Fourth Wing into a TikTok object. That is the hire that matches the sales, not the haunted-house one.

Lisa Joy, co-founder of Kilter Films with Jonathan Nolan, will direct the pilot and executive produce. Her Westworld work is the prestige line. Her Prime work is Fallout. Kilter’s own bio in the series-order release says Fallout had passed 100 million viewers worldwide across two seasons by March 2026, with 17 Emmy nominations for season 1, a second season on December 17, 2025, and season 3 filming later in 2026. Joy directed episode six of that second season. Nolan directed the first three episodes of season 1. Fourth Wing is being staffed by the shop that already gave Prime a giant genre hit, not by a borrowed HBO memory.

THE TEAM’S LAST HITS

  • Averill: Wednesday season 2 executive producer; Locke & Key co-creator; Hill House producer.
  • Joy and Kilter: Fallout, 100 million viewers across two seasons by March 2026; Westworld, 54 Emmy nominations over four seasons.
  • Jordan: Best Actor winner for Sinners at the 98th Academy Awards, a film that took a record 16 Oscar nominations.
  • Yarros: executive producer, on the call since the rights meeting, still writing the back half of the five-book plan.

Jordan and Outlier president Elizabeth Raposo produce through Outlier Society, which Jordan founded in 2016 and which holds a first-look deal with Amazon. He announced Fourth Wing in the same upfront breath as The Greatest, a Muhammad Ali series, and Delphi, a live-action Creed spin-off. Outlier is not dabbling in dragons. It is turning an Oscar week into a studio slate. Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark produce through Premeditated, launched in 2024 as the screen arm of Entangled, with a first-look at Amazon MGM Studios extended through summer 2032. The publisher that printed the books now sits inside the show.

Three Years, Two Showrunners, No Cast

The public path began in October 2023, months after publication, and it was messy. Moira Walley-Beckett, a Breaking Bad writer and the creator of Anne With an E, signed on as showrunner in summer 2024. She was gone in July 2025, with no public reason. Jac Schaeffer, who created WandaVision, was among the writers who took meetings. Averill closed as showrunner on September 24, 2025. The series order came seven and a half months later. Casting did not come with it.

THE DEVELOPMENT CLOCK

  1. December 2022: Yarros learns Amazon and Outlier have the deal, before Fourth Wing is on sale.
  2. May 2023: Fourth Wing is published.
  3. October 2023: the TV project becomes public.
  4. Summer 2024: Walley-Beckett takes the showrunner job.
  5. January 21, 2025: Onyx Storm is released; Yarros says she has read two script versions, including the pilot, and loves them.
  6. July 2025: Walley-Beckett exits.
  7. September 24, 2025: Averill is named showrunner.
  8. May 11, 2026: Prime Video orders the series. No cast is announced.
  9. September 29, 2026: Threshing Day goes on sale. Still no cast.

The scripts Yarros praised at the Onyx Storm midnight party in Los Angeles were Walley-Beckett’s. “I’ve read two versions of the script now and it is, oh my God,” she said, adding that she “kicked my feet the entire time” and “I love it.” She credited Walley-Beckett with the voices and the dialogue. Averill is now the person adapting the novels. Those are not the same pages, and Prime has not shown the new ones.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The order: Prime Video has a series, not a pilot presentation, from Amazon MGM Studios.
  • The room: Averill showruns; Joy directs the pilot; Yarros, Jordan, Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated executive produce.
  • The book plan: five Empyrean novels, with three published and a companion collection now on sale.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • The faces: no Violet, no Xaden, no dragons on a call sheet.
  • The season: no episode count, no shoot start, no premiere year.
  • The page: no Book 4 title, no Book 4 date, no public chapter of Averill’s script.

On X, the live argument is not whether the show exists. It is who gets to look like Xaden Riorson, and whether Prime will flatten him. The series order did not quiet that. It made the wait louder.

What Happens When Book Four Has No Date?

In November 2023, Yarros was asked, straight, whether the TV show would hit the unfinished-book problem that swallowed Game of Thrones. She had an answer then.

So I can promise, unless something happens to me, we’re not going to have that situation. We do have a publication schedule, it is just not public yet.

Rebecca Yarros, November 2023

Three years later the schedule is still not public. Threshing Day is. The official site calls it a companion, not the continuation of Violet and Xaden after Onyx Storm, and it gathers thirteen stories from Basgiath, including Xaden’s threshing. A Denver stop on the release tour sold out. Readers got lore. They did not get the next novel.

Yarros told producers she did not want to clog a writers’ room, and then described the one note she did want to give: a plot point that might smash into Book 4. That warning only works if Book 4 exists in time for the room to hear it. Season 1 can live on Fourth Wing alone. A five-book franchise cannot. Prime has now said, in public, that the rest of the novels are the plan “in success.” Success, in streaming, arrives before the last manuscript.

Prime Canceled My Lady Jane After One Season

Prime has already tested fantasy romance on this service and pulled it. My Lady Jane, an eight-episode alt-history romance, dropped all at once on June 27, 2024. It was canceled in August 2024. Critics liked it. The audience, by Prime’s measure, was not large enough to pay for more magic. Shadow and Bone, Netflix’s earlier BookTok-adjacent fantasy, ended in November 2023 after two seasons, with a written Six of Crows spin-off left unshot. Dragons do not make that math kinder. They make it more expensive.

Fourth Wing is the bigger IP, and the bigger risk. The books have the readers My Lady Jane never assembled. They also need rider-to-dragon spectacle at a scale that killed other fantasy budgets when the romance half did not convert casual viewers. Averill’s Wednesday work is the argument that a fandom show can be both mean and sticky. Joy’s Fallout work is the argument that Prime will spend. Neither argument is a ratings statement. The last time this streamer had a cheeky romantasy, it lasted one season.

The One Casting Rule Yarros Will Not Drop

Yarros is not a logo on the call sheet. She is an executive producer, and she has been in the room since the rights meeting at Pelletier’s house. Outlier’s diversity and inclusion rider was, she has said, a reason she was glad the books landed there. On January 21, 2025, she drew the line that still has no actor attached to it.

My biggest thing has always been, Xaden isn’t white and I need him to not be white on television. And really, that’s my only sticking point, that and like it would be nice if we kept the dialogue the same. But really, it’s just don’t mess with the representation.

Rebecca Yarros, Onyx Storm release event, Los Angeles, January 21, 2025

In the novel, Violet sees “warm tawny skin and dark stubble,” then “tawny brown skin crowned by a cloud of black curls.” Yarros has refused to feed a single fancast, on purpose, so the role stays open to more than one kind of person of color. Jordan has said, around the order, that the show should avoid obvious choices. That is the same pressure from a different chair. The books’ male lead is already written. The show has to cast him that way or it has already lost the author.

WHAT IS ALREADY LOCKED

  • Author: Yarros executive produces and has a standing Book 4 veto in spirit, if not a title on a contract riders can read.
  • Xaden: a person of color, per the text and per Yarros, with no name attached as of September 2026.
  • Dialogue: she asked that the talk stay close to the page, then called representation the point she will not trade.
  • Scope: Joy on the pilot, Averill on the run, Kilter and Outlier and Premeditated on the logo stack, worldwide Prime window.

Yarros’s May 11 line was short. “I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them.” Readers tracking her latest releases and upcoming novels can buy Threshing Day now. They cannot buy Book 4. Prime can order a franchise. It cannot air an ending Yarros has not written, or a Xaden it has not cast. The series order was the easy night. The hard one is still off the call sheet.

Annual reports are read to the footnotes, court filings to the exhibits, government releases to the methodology section, because that is where the numbers that matter usually sit. Each figure that reaches the page is checked against the document it came from, and claims that cannot be tied to a primary source are left out. That approach runs across the site's ten sections, written for an international readership: news, business and technology on one side, science, sports, entertainment, travel, lifestyle, gaming and auto on the other, all held to the same standard of evidence.
