Prime Video Launches Neagley Without a Lee Child Novel
Neagley arrived on Prime Video with all eight episodes, Alan Ritchson in only two of them, and no Lee Child book to adapt, a franchise wager still being tested.
Prime Video released all eight episodes of Neagley on September 16, 2026, the same day Reacher season 4 ended. Maria Sten stars as Chicago private investigator Frances Neagley, and Alan Ritchson appears as Jack Reacher in only two of those hours.
The mystery is not taken from a Lee Child novel. The first Neagley book, Zero Margin, is dated March 23, 2027. That is the wager: a Reacher-universe series that has to work when the big man is mostly gone, and when the page still has not caught up to the screen.
Prime Parked the Spinoff on Finale Night
Reacher season 4, drawn from Child’s novel Gone Tomorrow, opened with three episodes on August 12, 2026, then ran weekly through September 16. Sten did not appear in that season. She was shooting her own show.
Prime Video timed the spinoff to the mothership’s last night. In an August 12 press note, the studio said that upon the season 4 finale, all eight episodes of Neagley will be released that Wednesday, exclusively on the service in more than 240 countries and territories.
The trailer that went out with that note is the studio’s own pitch for the handoff.
People who finished the finale have been starting Neagley in the same sitting. That is the point of dumping eight episodes against a last chapter. It is also the risk. The same account that still wants Reacher is being asked to switch leads before the credits have cooled.
THE PATH TO SEPTEMBER 16
- October 1, 2024: Prime Video orders the series, with Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton as co-showrunners.
- February 18, 2025: Principal photography starts in Toronto.
- June 7, 2025: Shooting wraps.
- June 30, 2026: Prime Video sets the premiere date and issues first-look stills.
- August 12, 2026: The official trailer lands as Reacher season 4 begins.
- September 16, 2026: All eight episodes arrive with the season 4 finale.
Santora already runs Reacher. Wootton’s credits include Scorpion and The Endgame. Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios produce. Lee Child, Don Granger, Sam Hill, Adam Higgs, and Lisa Kussner executive produce. Hill directed the first two episodes. Episodes run 41 to 57 minutes.
An Original Case With No Parent Novel
Every Reacher season has been an adaptation. Neagley is not. The scripts build a new Chicago case from a character Child first put on the page in Without Fail in 2002, then used sparingly. Sten has said she read those appearances and then handed Santora extra backstory, including a version of why Neagley cannot bear to be touched.
Co-showrunner Nicholas Wootton put that condition at the center of the season. “There was one element to me that was so fascinating, which was she couldn’t touch people. She has haphephobia,” he said. “So, we really built a lot around why.”
On the page, Reacher once said she was born with it. The series treats the fear as a wound with a story. That is the opening the books never filled, and it is also the tell. The writers are inventing in a gap, not tracing a bestseller.
Readers love Neagley because she doesn’t need anyone, not even Reacher. She’s smart, capable, and relentlessly effective. It was time she got her own story.
Lee Child, on Bantam’s Neagley deal
Child’s Jack Reacher novels have sold more than 200 million copies. Bantam still bought two Frances Neagley thrillers from him and Yasmin Angoe, and scheduled Zero Margin, co-written with Yasmin Angoe for March 23, 2027. The TV plot and the novel’s plot are not the same job. In the book, an encrypted call pulls Neagley toward a kidnapped son. On Prime Video, a childhood friend dies on the Chicago L, and she starts knocking on doors.
Reacher season 5 is already lined up from Make Me. The mothership still has a shelf of novels. The spinoff had to go first and hope the shelf follows.
Alan Ritchson Appears in Two Episodes
Amazon lists Ritchson as a guest star. Credit listings put him in episode 1, “L Train,” and episode 8, “Touched.” That is the first hour and the last hour. The six in between have to run on Sten, a Chicago detective, an office assistant, and whoever else she lets into the room.
WHAT THE WAGER ACTUALLY IS
- The lead: Sten, a series regular in Reacher seasons 1 through 3, now carries eight episodes as a Chicago P.I. and former master sergeant from the Army’s 110th Special Investigations Unit.
- The guest: Ritchson, who has 32 Reacher episodes behind him, is in two of eight here.
- The page: No Child novel sits under the season; Zero Margin is still unpublished.
The ensemble around her is new to this world. Greyston Holt plays Detective Hudson Riley of Chicago PD. Adeline Rudolph is Renee Birdwhistle, who works in Neagley’s office. Jasper Jones is Keno. Matthew Del Negro is Pierce Woodrow. Damon Herriman is Lawrence Cole. Wootton has said this group is meant to stay, unlike Reacher’s rotating towns and helpers.
Critic Alison Herman put the doubt in one line: a Reacher spinoff without Reacher has a problem, because Reacher is a load-bearing part of Reacher. Alan Sepinwall asked a plainer version of the same thing, whether the parent show’s formula still works if the lead is not absurdly large. Those are not nitpicks. They are the test Prime paid for.
Critics Score It Below Every Reacher Season
Rotten Tomatoes had Neagley at 90% from 20 reviews once the first wave landed. Metacritic’s weighted score was 69 out of 100 from 12 critics, filed as generally favorable. Reacher’s own Tomatometer sits higher in every season on the board.
TOMATOMETER NEXT TO THE PARENT SHOW
| Season | Rotten Tomatoes |
|---|---|
| Neagley, season 1 | 90% |
| Reacher, season 1 | 92% |
| Reacher, season 2 | 98% |
| Reacher, season 3 | 98% |
| Reacher, season 4 | 94% |
| Reacher, series average | 95% |
The sample is thin. Neagley’s 90% rests on 20 notices. Reacher season 1 had 74. Season 4 had 33. A handful of later pans would move the spinoff more than they would move the parent show. Early notices still cluster on the same split: Sten holds the frame, the mystery is familiar, and Ritchson’s comic timing is missed when the hour turns solemn.
Jack Seale called it Reacher without Reacher, and without the jokes, then argued Sten makes her a more vulnerable kind of avenger. Brian Tallerico wrote that the season is as much about trauma as it is about throwing people through windows, and that the show takes itself a bit more seriously a bit too often. Both can be true at once. The 90% is not a Reacher number. It is a permission slip to keep going.
What Happens After the L Train Death?
Episode 1 is titled “L Train.” A young man walks onto a Chicago Loop platform, then down to the tracks, and into an oncoming train. Police are ready to call it an accident. Frances Neagley knows the dead man. He is Tommy Crane, a childhood friend. A message after the fact tells her the official story is wrong.
Prime Video’s logline stays in that groove. Neagley is a private investigator in Chicago and a former military protégé of Jack Reacher in the 110th. When a beloved friend from her past is killed in a suspicious accident, she uses what she learned in that unit and puts herself on a path toward something worse than a bad night on the El.
The trail leads to Echo Canyon Farm, a commune fronted by Lawrence Cole, and to Pierce Woodrow, a pharmaceutical chief with a pitch. The season stays in and around Chicago instead of hopping cities the way Reacher does. That is a production choice and a character choice. Neagley has an office, a city, and people who keep showing up. Reacher has a bus ticket.
The opener still gives the audience a dose of the old pairing. Neagley and Reacher pull a kidnapped girl out of trouble before her own case starts. Then he leaves, and the hour belongs to her. Viewers who wanted eight episodes of that pairing will not get them. Viewers who wanted to know what she does when he is not in the room finally will.
Second Place on Prime Video Charts
Nielsen has not published a Neagley week yet. The service’s streaming ranker now lands about two weeks late, and the newest public window still covers late August, when Reacher season 4 was the title to beat. The useful comparison is older, and brutal. Nielsen counted 1.84 billion minutes for Reacher season 1 in its first three days after the February 4, 2022 premiere. Nobody should pretend the spinoff is chasing that figure in public.
WHAT THE FIRST DAYS SHOW
- Eight at once: The full season went live on September 16, 2026, so a weekend binge is possible in a way weekly Reacher season 4 was not.
- Chart position: FlixPatrol’s top 10 on Amazon Prime in the United States on September 18, 2026 had Reacher at No. 1 and Neagley at No. 2.
- Same stack abroad: The day after premiere, FlixPatrol had Neagley at No. 2 on Prime Video worldwide, still behind Reacher in the United States, Australia, and Sweden, and inside the service’s top 10 in every country the tracker covers for Prime.
- No renewal yet: Season 2 has not been announced.
Second place behind the parent show, 48 hours in, is the result Prime’s calendar almost designed. Reacher had a five-week head start on the same app. Neagley has the finished pile of episodes. If the spinoff cannot climb over a season that already ended, the bet still can pay as long as it does not fall off the list once the finale traffic cools.
The First Neagley Novel Comes Next March
Bantam’s deal is two books, not one. Child’s line on the announcement was that she does not need anyone. Angoe said he trusted her with the character. The novel will not tidy up the TV plot. It starts from an encrypted call and a former commanding officer, not from Tommy Crane on the L.
That split is the long version of the same wager. Television went first. Print will arrive on March 23, 2027, and will have to live next to a version of Neagley that already has a team, a city, and a recorded reason she will not shake a hand. Sten’s season treats that handshake as work. Child’s old books treated the condition as a fact of birth. Someone, later, will have to decide which version is canon.
For now the show is the canon that exists. Eight episodes are up. Ritchson is in two of them. The reviews are strong enough to air and not strong enough to copy Reacher’s scores. The charts have her right behind him. Season 2 is still a blank, and the book is still a cover date. Prime already spent the finale night. The rest of the bet is whether anyone stays in Chicago once the big man has left the platform.
