Moncler Bets Its Largest Store on Fifth Avenue
Moncler opened its largest store on Fifth Avenue, a three-year bet to lift thin U.S. sales on a site Under Armour never opened.
Moncler opened a 23,680-square-foot Fifth Avenue flagship at 767 Fifth Avenue on September 10, 2026, its largest shop in the world. The two-level store sits in the General Motors Building, a short walk from Central Park, on a floor plate that spent years without a working tenant.
Executive chairman Remo Ruffini has said the Americas remain thinner for Moncler than for rival houses. The party that filled the aisles that night, in 86-degree heat, was how he chose to introduce a U.S. bet the sales mix has not yet proved.
Under Armour Never Opened This Store
Ruffini told interviewers before the opening that he had wanted this exact corner for years, the block between Fifth and Madison that he called a point of reference. Getting inside took a rebuild he put at three years, and a sublease on a space another brand had already paid for and then abandoned.
FAO Schwarz ran the toy floors here until 2015. Apple later used the room as a temporary shop while its cube across the plaza was rebuilt. Under Armour signed in 2016, beating Nike for the site, and never opened a store of its own.
HOW 767 FIFTH AVENUE CHANGED HANDS
- 2015: FAO Schwarz leaves the General Motors Building after a 30-year run.
- 2016: Under Armour signs for the former toy floors and later holds the space without opening.
- 2021: Under Armour puts a large piece of the lease on the sublease market, with term left through 2035.
- September 2024: Moncler takes a two-level sublease in the same building.
- September 10, 2026: Moncler opens the 23,680-square-foot flagship.
The finished shop is smaller than the old toy store and smaller than Under Armour’s original hold. It is still the largest Moncler room on earth, and it sits beside Apple’s rebuilt cube on a plaza that already pulls tourist traffic Ruffini does not have to invent.
The Americas Still Account for 13.5 Percent
Moncler Group closed the first half of 2026 with 1,289.9 million euros in sales, up 9 percent at constant exchange rates. The Moncler brand itself booked 1,089.6 million euros. Direct-to-consumer took 933.2 million euros of that, 85.6 percent of the brand, and sales in stores open at least a year rose 7 percent.
The map under those totals is lopsided. Asia delivered 592.9 million euros, 54.4 percent of brand sales, and rose 19 percent at constant rates. EMEA contributed 349.7 million euros, 32.1 percent, and fell 4 percent. The Americas still supplied 13.5 percent, or 147.0 million euros, even after a 6 percent constant-currency rise driven by local shoppers rather than tourists.
MONCLER BRAND SALES BY REGION, FIRST HALF OF 2026
| Region | Sales | Share | Change at constant FX |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asia | 592.9 million euros | 54.4% | +19% |
| EMEA | 349.7 million euros | 32.1% | -4% |
| Americas | 147.0 million euros | 13.5% | +6% |
Ruffini has said the group is a bit under-penetrated next to its competitors. As of June 30, 2026, Moncler ran 298 directly operated stores, 54 of them in the Americas. Fifth Avenue opened after that count, so the new shop is an extra door on a region that still trails Asia by a wide margin. Full-year 2025 figures show the same tilt: the Americas were 14.4 percent of brand sales, or 391.1 million euros, up 5 percent at constant rates, inside a group that booked 3,132.1 million euros and grew 3 percent.
Leo Rongone became group chief executive in April 2026. Ruffini kept the executive chairman role and creative direction. The Fifth Avenue project predates that split. It is Ruffini’s room, on Ruffini’s favorite block, aimed at a market he has called unfinished.
Grenoble Gets the Whole Second Floor
Ground level carries Men’s, Women’s, and Enfant from the main Moncler Collection, plus Genius collaborations and the latest footwear. The second floor is given entirely to Moncler Grenoble, the mountain line, with skiwear, goggles, après-ski, and lighter hiking layers set in their own room rather than mixed into city down.
That split is the product argument inside the square footage. Collection and Genius stay on the street floor, where Fifth Avenue walk-ins live. Grenoble, which has to fight for mind share in a warm city, gets a full level of technical hardware, including house takes on Stöckli skis, POC helmets, and WHITESPACE snowboards made with Shaun White, a Moncler ambassador. The store is built so a shopper can buy a city jacket without seeing a binding, or climb the stairs and stay in the mountains.
Moncler already had New York shops in SoHo and on Madison Avenue. Those doors remain. Fifth Avenue is the one meant to hold the whole brand at once, and to do it on the corridor where tourists already walk with bags from somewhere else.
What Shoppers Can Order That Other Stores Cannot
The opening is also a test kitchen. Several services start here before they go wider, which is how a single expensive lease tries to earn more than its own till.
FIFTH AVENUE ONLY, FOR NOW
- LoveFrom drop: Early access to the second LoveFrom, Moncler collection, built with Jony Ive’s studio, stays in this shop until October 1, 2026, with six New York patches clients can add through that date.
- Moncler to Measure: The first made-to-order workshop offers four house silhouettes, two for women and two for men, in fabrics and finishes chosen in the store.
- 5th Ave on the Go: A site on Moncler.com extends those services online, including an AI Outerwear Guide that asks up to three questions and returns as many as 12 styles.
- Virtual Dressing Room: A later U.S. tool will build an avatar from a face scan and body measures, then map fit at the chest, shoulders, waist, and sleeve.
The modular LoveFrom outerwear system sits on a down-filled Moncore jacket, with a field jacket, a parka, and a poncho that clip on through a magnetic Duo Button, cut from recycled nylon in a rainwear-neutral shade. Ruffini has called Ive the designer of the modern era. The New York patches (a yellow taxi, an apple, a guitar case, a drum set, a bear paw, and a vinyl record) let a client pick up to four, a souvenir layer on a technical shell.
Moncler to Measure will reach the Champs-Élysées shop in Paris on September 15, 2026. Until then, the atelier is a Fifth Avenue extra: cashmere flannel, silk, leather, suede, shearling, and fil coupé, with studs, embroidery, crystals, laser-cut florals, and beadwork, plus a leather lining tag that can carry a name. Clients can keep the felt logo, switch to a tonal outline, or drop the mark. Sleeve length is adjustable. That is a lot of labor for a jacket that already sells as a finished object, and it is the clearest sign the store is meant to hold high-spend clients, not only walk-in puffer traffic.
A 26-Foot Atrium and a Curiosity Cabin
French studio Gilles & Boissier has designed Moncler stores with Ruffini for more than 20 years, from the first Paris shop onward. Patrick Gilles and Dorothée Boissier also worked on his home. Fifth Avenue is the largest room they have built for him.
Moncler Fifth Avenue is a brand statement on one of the most iconic addresses in the world. We conceived it as a living space. A place shaped by the ideas, culture, and spirit of the city, while remaining true to the brand’s DNA.
Remo Ruffini, Executive Chairman, Moncler S.p.A.
Gilles described a 26-foot atrium and a long view that is supposed to feel like a library or an archive, with depth and symmetry rather than a single wow wall. Boissier said the first sensation on entry is the thing they design toward. The façade mixes glass with Saint Williams granite and LED light. Inside, checkerboard floors switch between polished and raw, textured glass is meant to read as a frozen waterfall, and a freestanding curiosity cabin is built to take seasonal installs.
A stone work by Ugo Rondinone ties the two floors together. Pieces by Jean-Guillaume Mathiaut, Paul Bik, and Arno Declercq sit in the same rooms as the stock, not in a side gallery. Pine trees run up toward the glass. Fitting rooms are treated as private suites. On Friday, September 11, the company posted a first look from inside the shop.

Cher, an 86-Degree Night, and Gotham Hall
The ribbon cutting fell on the first night of New York Fashion Week. Guests arrived in full Moncler looks on an 86-degree September evening, some of them in down. Jordan Clarkson wore a custom Knicks blue-and-orange bomber. Serena Williams chose a white padded skirt. Future came in a technical tracksuit. Olivia Palermo wore a light shacket.
Cher’s arrival drew shouts, and Jessica Chastain talking under her breath. “I have a Moncler that I love especially. I got it in Monte Carlo, and it’s a little vest and it was sparkly, so of course I was drawn to it,” Cher said. Chastain went back to a Courchevel show held in a snowstorm, when the group stood in huge hooded white coats that felt, she said, like a community.
Mark Ronson and Carlita played inside the store while chef Yann Nury sent canapés and champagne through the aisles. Cars then took a tighter list to Gotham Hall, where a mirrored ceiling hung over a woodland set and Daniel Humm, the three-Michelin-star chef at Eleven Madison Park, plated an heirloom tomato salad with basil and goat cheese, a truffle-and-gruyere hotdog, roasted chicken with polenta, and a berry-and-quark dessert. The menu card called it a story that started when snow met concrete.
The star-filled opening-night guest list ran through Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Spike Lee, Adrien Brody, Colin Kaepernick, Odell Beckham Jr., Maria Sharapova, Adriana Lima, Shaun White, Helena Christensen, Penn Badgley, and dozens more, all of them dressed in the house. That is a marketing spend that does not show up as a line item on the lease, and it is why the night read online as a photo call. The few people looking at the business called a giant physical store either a step into a bigger league or a late bet on a channel Moncler already depends on.
Same-Store Sales Went Backwards Last Year
Direct shops already do most of the work. Physical stores beat the online channel in the first half of 2026, and like-for-like sales were up 7 percent. Group EBIT in the half was 245.4 million euros, a 19.0 percent margin. Those are not the numbers of a company that forgot how to run stores.
They are also not a U.S. victory. In 2025, comparable sales fell 1 percent in 2025 for the Moncler brand. EMEA, still a third of the business, is sliding on weaker tourist traffic. Wholesale is being trimmed on purpose. Ruffini has said Fifth Avenue will not cannibalize department-store doors because the clients differ. That claim will be tested once the new till starts reporting inside the Americas line, which is 13.5 percent of the brand and has to climb a long way before it looks like Asia.
THE U.S. GAP IN FOUR FIGURES
- 298 stores: Direct Moncler boutiques worldwide as of June 30, 2026.
- 54 stores: Direct Americas boutiques on that date, before Fifth Avenue opened.
- 7 percent: Rise in sales at stores open at least a year in the first half of 2026.
- 1 percent: Fall in those same comparable sales across 2025.
A 23,680-square-foot room on Fifth Avenue cannot, by itself, reorder that mix. It can pull New York traffic, host made-to-order work, and give Grenoble a stage in a city that does not ski. Whether that is enough is the wager Ruffini placed on a floor Under Armour left dark. The New York in Moncler show in Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall, a street-level reminder of two decades in the city, runs through September 13, 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Occupied the Fifth Avenue Space Before Moncler?
FAO Schwarz occupied 61,000 square feet in the General Motors Building for 30 years and left in 2015. Apple then used the site as a temporary shop while its cube was rebuilt. Under Armour took the space in 2016, at one point holding about 53,000 square feet, and in 2021 offered 24,403 square feet for sublease with term through 2035 without ever opening a store. Moncler’s finished shop is 23,680 square feet on two levels.
How Does the LoveFrom, Moncler Layering System Work?
A down-filled Moncore jacket is the base. Three outer layers, a field jacket, a parka, and a poncho, attach with a magnetic Duo Button and are cut from recycled nylon. For Fifth Avenue, six limited New York patches (taxi, apple, guitar case, drum set, bear paw, vinyl record) can be added, up to four per garment, through October 1, 2026, when the collection moves to selected other shops and the online store.
What Can Clients Change With Moncler to Measure?
Four silhouettes, two women’s and two men’s, can be ordered in cashmere flannel, silk, leather, suede, shearling, or fil coupé, with metal studs, hand embroidery, crystals, laser-cut florals, or beadwork. Branding can be the classic felt logo, a tonal outline, or no visible logo, and sleeve length can be changed. A leather interior tag can carry the client’s name. The service leaves Fifth Avenue for the Champs-Élysées boutique in Paris on September 15, 2026.
Who Designed the Moncler Fifth Avenue Interiors?
Patrick Gilles and Dorothée Boissier of Gilles & Boissier designed the shop. They have worked with Ruffini since Moncler’s first Paris store more than 20 years ago and also designed his residence. Gilles described the 26-foot atrium as a long, symmetrical view meant to feel like a library or archive, and Boissier said the first sensation on walking in is the point of the design.
