Netflix Turned the GTA 6 Look Into a Film Chart
Netflix turned Rockstar’s 27-minute GTA 6 look into a 31.1 million-view film after a six-hour exclusive that served both companies.
31.1 million Netflix views landed on Grand Theft Auto 6’s 27-minute look in four days, after a six-hour exclusive on August 27. Rockstar Games posted the same tape to YouTube at 9 p.m. Eastern and kept the file.
Netflix filed the special as an English-language film. It beat a Robert De Niro thriller to No. 1, which is the part of this launch that is not about Florida swamps.
Six Hours Was All Netflix Bought
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look went live on Netflix at 3 p.m. Eastern on August 27. Six hours later it was on YouTube and on Rockstar’s own site. That is a rental, not a rights deal, and both sides got what they came for.
Netflix counted 31.1 million views from that Thursday through Sunday, August 30, the close of its weekly Top 10 window. A view, in the streamer’s math, is total hours watched divided by runtime, so a household that played the tape twice still counts as one. It still led the weekly English-language film rankings in 87 of 93 countries Netflix tracks.
THE NETFLIX FOUR-DAY TALLY
- The chart: 31.1 million views from August 27 through August 30, filed as an English-language film.
- The map: No. 1 in 87 of 93 tracked countries.
- The runner-up: The Whisper Man, with 23.2 million views in the same window.
- The leftover: 17 million views on Rockstar’s YouTube upload as of September 1, counted on a looser clock.
Sensor Tower clocked a 35% hour-over-hour jump in U.S. mobile Netflix viewing during the premiere, with mobile users 50% above the prior 12-week average for that slot and web traffic up 125%. The site sagged under the load. For a trailer, that is a lot of buffering.
The login wall did real work. You had to be a paying member to see Vice City first. Rockstar then put the unedited look on its own channels, so the streamer never owned the asset. Take-Two Interactive Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick later called the drop one of the hors d’oeuvres of the marketing campaign, which is a polite way of saying Netflix was the appetizer tray.
The Leaks Arrived Nine Days Early
The premiere was already on the calendar when a group calling itself CyberLeek started posting playable-build clips on August 18. The footage was rough, often shot off a monitor, and used in part to push a cryptocurrency. It was also enough to wreck the surprise Rockstar had been sitting on since 2023.
THE WEEK THE BUILD GOT OUT
- August 18, 2026: CyberLeek begins posting GTA 6 gameplay and map material, then threatens daily drops.
- August 20, 2026: Take-Two seeks subpoenas in the Southern District of New York aimed at Microsoft and Discord to identify the source.
- August 26, 2026: Rockstar publishes a public letter calling the leaks heartbreaking and pointing to the next day’s Netflix look.
- August 27, 2026: The official 27-minute tape premieres at 3 p.m. Eastern, with livestreams allowed if creators add commentary.
The letter did not name CyberLeek. It did not need to. “It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time,” Rockstar wrote, adding that the intended experience “may now be impacted by some spoilers.”
The Netflix slot, announced on August 6, suddenly had a second job: put a clean, official image on top of a week of stolen clips. Rockstar told creators they could livestream the look from 3 p.m. if they did not dump the unedited file without context. The company wanted reaction. It did not want a second leak pipeline.
What the 27 Minutes Show
The special is a silent tour, no host, no captions, built around Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos as a couple whose easy score goes wrong across Leonida, Rockstar’s stand-in for Florida. Netflix lists it at 27 minutes and 16+. Rockstar says the footage was captured on a PlayStation 5, and other briefings specified the base console, not the Pro. That line is a hardware ad wearing a credit roll.
The studio’s own plot copy is blunt about the bind they are in.
Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida, forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.
Rockstar Games, official Grand Theft Auto VI description
The tape opens on a botched pickup in a Vice City apartment tower, a drug den that turns into a police raid. From there it cuts through driving, a bullet-riddled chase, a nighttime security job at a high-end party, and a stairwell brawl in which Lucia fights for a gun. Missions can be played as either lead, together or apart, with a swap that will feel familiar to anyone who jumped between Michael, Trevor, and Franklin in Grand Theft Auto V.
WHAT THE TAPE PUTS ON SCREEN
- The couple: Jason and Lucia hold hands, talk business on a rooftop, and take jobs for names that flash by, including nightclub owner Boobie Ike and getaway work for Raul Bautista.
- The heat: Cops track clothes, cameras, and whether the pair is moving as a unit, with a search circle on the map instead of a convoy of blips.
- The toys: Fan boats, kayaks, airboats, scuba, street racing, a parachute jump that shows the draw distance, and a strip-club stop that will surprise no one who has played this series.
- The small stuff: Dialogue choices in the Red Dead style, a dog you can pet, a fridge you can raid, and gunplay that slows into something closer to Max Payne than to GTA V’s spray.
The louder argument after the credits is the romance, not the kayaks. The look spends a long time on how Jason and Lucia check in, split up, and come back together, and that is the mechanic people are already treating like a loyalty test. Rockstar can say the pair still function as partners in crime if you ignore the relationship track. The tape still sells the Bonnie-and-Clyde hook as the thing you came to see.
Vice City’s other people look less like scenery than in past games. Shopkeepers shoot back. A stairwell fight does not pause for your convenience. If the leaks made the world feel brittle, the official look’s counter is that Leonida will hit you first.
That is the YouTube copy Rockstar posted at 9 p.m. Eastern, age-gated, the version that no longer requires a Netflix password.
An $80 Game Ships Without a Disc
The special is free if you already pay for Netflix, and the game is not. Standard Grand Theft Auto VI is $79.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. The Ultimate Edition is $99.99 and adds a bundle of vehicles, weapons, apparel, and extra actions. There is no last-gen version and no PC date. Rockstar has also been clear this launch is the single-player campaign, with any new GTA Online held back.
HOW THE BOX IS PRICED
| Version | Price (USD) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $79.99 | The campaign on PS5 or Xbox Series X and S, digital or a code in a box |
| Ultimate | $99.99 | Premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and extra actions threaded through the game |
| Pre-order extra | Included before November 20 | Vintage Vice City Pack; digital pre-orders also get a month of GTA+ |
Pre-orders opened June 25. Digital buyers can preload on November 12, a week before launch. The so-called physical copy that ships that same week is a download code in a box, not a playable disc. CyberLeek’s manifesto treated that choice as the grievance. Rockstar has not reversed it.
An $80 sticker on a game you cannot hold is a hard sell next to a 27-minute Netflix sample that asked for a subscription instead of a pre-order. The companies are betting the tape is the close. The leaks already showed enough of the loop that anyone still waiting wanted an official picture, and this was the picture.
The $8 Billion Bookings Bet
Take-Two does not need the special to “work” as TV. It needs November 19 to land inside fiscal 2027. On August 7 the publisher reported first-quarter net bookings of $1.39 billion, a touch above its own range, and it restated an $8.0 to $8.2 billion outlook for the fiscal year. That midpoint, the company said, is about 20% growth over fiscal 2026, with Rockstar expected to supply roughly 37% of bookings against 34% from Zynga and 29% from 2K.
With these positive trends and excitement around the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, we are reiterating our Fiscal 2027 Net Bookings outlook of $8.0 to $8.2 billion.
Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO, Take-Two Interactive
The date has already moved twice. Rockstar first sold a 2025 window off the December 2023 trailer, then in 2024 pushed the game to May 26, 2026, saying it needed time “to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.” In November 2025 it moved the date again, to November 19, 2026, and apologized for “adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait.” Take-Two has spent 2026 repeating that this third date is the one. Co-studio head Rob Nelson told Famitsu it will be released on time.
A six-hour Netflix burst does not change that math. It is the public proof that marketing has started, which Zelnick had said the company would not fund until it was close. Close, in this case, is a Thursday in November, 13 years after Grand Theft Auto V.
Why Rockstar Went to Netflix First
Rockstar approached Netflix, not the other way around. Several preview briefings at Rockstar North said the studio picked the streamer because it wanted a living-room premiere, and Netflix’s own post treats the deal as a get. Brandon Riegg, vice president of nonfiction series, put the pitch in cultural terms, the sort of line you write when you are trying to make a game tape sound like a series drop so you can debut the next Grand Theft Auto story with subscribers first.
Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first. It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.
Brandon Riegg, VP of Nonfiction Series, Netflix
The symmetry is almost too neat. Grand Theft Auto V came out in 2013, the same year Netflix was ramping original series. Thirteen years later the sequel’s longest official look is catalogued next to documentaries and thrillers, with subtitles in more than a dozen languages. Netflix gets a night of appointment viewing and a Top 10 graphic. Rockstar gets a clean master of a game that had been leaking in scraps, plus a reminder that this footage runs on a base PlayStation 5.
Sony is the quiet winner in that credit. Xbox Series X and S are also day-one platforms, and the boxed code works there too, but the tape is a PS5 capture. Every time the lighting holds in a nightclub or a swamp, the argument is that last generation’s hardware is enough. Microsoft still sells a copy. Sony sells the footage.
November 19 Occupies the Holiday Shelf
The special is still on Netflix. Pre-orders remain open on the official Grand Theft Auto VI site and on the console stores. The Vintage Vice City Pack is the bribe for anyone who pays before November 20. After that, the price is the price.
Competing publishers now have to ship into a window that has one occupant. Hardware sellers get a reason to move base consoles that have been on shelves for years. Netflix gets to say a video game was its top film. Rockstar gets to say the leaks were not the first look, even if they were the first look.
Zelnick already filed the Netflix night under hors d’oeuvres. The date on the main plate is still November 19, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, at $79.99 a copy.
