World Kindness Day: Be kind To Yourself And Others

The word ‘kindness’ has its roots in the Old English word ‘kyndnes,’ which itself is derived from the Middle English word ‘kindenes,’ meaning ‘courtesy.’

The main objective of World Kindness Day is to spread kindness with small gestures. The main tradition of the day is to be kind and to try and encourage kindness to prevail over hatred. Whether it’s helping out someone with chores, taking the time out to ask how someone is doing, or complimenting someone, the name of the game is kindness, and we all have it in us.

So, what is the history of world kindness day? The history of World Kindness Day dates back to 1997 when World Kindness Movement hosted the first conference in Tokyo, Japan to bring together like-minded organizations from across the world. It is observed in many countries like Canada, Australia, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates. It was in 1998, that the day became an annual observance.

The kindness movement started gaining acceptance across the globe with each passing year. In 2005, the UK kindness movement began while in 2009 Singapore too joined the initiative. From the UK (2010), Australia (2012), France (2015), USA (2018), by 2019 the World Kindness Movement had reached 27 countries.

After its long journey of decades, the World Kindness Movement was finally recognized as an official NGO in Switzerland.

Even though World kindness day is about showing kind gestures to others, I would encourage you to go kind to yourself as well. It has been hard since you started, and if you take care of yourself you can take care of others.  Today go on a date with yourself, open your heart to all the good things. It might be difficult to appreciate others when you are underappreciated. Maybe you have not reached the goals that you wanted to, maybe you did not get your favourite food, or maybe your favourite character in a movie did not act the way you wanted. But it is okay! They put effort. You know you also put in a lot of effort. Every effort deserves a clap and pat.

So, don’t worry about how weird the other party feels, go around and say good things to everyone! Today is all about encouragement and spreading positivity. Do not forget to stay hydrated and eat healthily.

Happy World Kindness Day !!!!
