World First Aid Day : Underlining The Importance of First Aid In Daily Life

“Not all the angels carry magic wands, some carry first aid kits as well.”

As tweeted by the State Transport Authority of Odisha, 50% of Road Accident deaths can be avoided if the victim can get timely assistance. A Red Cross survey sheds light on the fact that 59% of deaths from injuries would have been prevented by basic first aid. Thus, highlighting the importance of First Aid. World First Aid Day was invoked in 2000, by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and continues to be commemorated on the second Saturday of September. This year, the theme of WFAD is “First Aid in Schools”.  According to researchers, two-thirds of children experience at least one unexpected injury in a year. The students in kindergarten are more prone to such injuries which require emergency care. Quantitative analysis has shown that the knowledge, attitude and practice of first aid are very low, where 8 out of 10 parents do not know first aid procedures to save their child’s life, similar is the case with the teachers and staff in junior most schools. Amidst the threats of COVID-19, proper gestures and responsibilities have increased importance. To adapt to changing times, preparing the youth for adaptation is crucial. Proper first aid facility reduces recovery time, hospital time, prevents unnecessary visits to hospitals and helps prevent deterioration of the condition.

P.D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre has circulated the principles of first aid, as listed below:

1. Preserve life

2. Prevent deterioration

3. Promote recovery

4. Take immediate action

5. Calm down the situation

6. Call for medical assistance

7. Apply the relevant treatment

Accidents are like the unwelcome guest. No one knows at which step of life, at which place, at which time we might face one. So, excluding it just for the medical practitioners and the availability of first-aid kits is not enough. The knowledge of first aid should be provided to everyone. Starting campaigns at the school or university level to aware the students as well as faculties, can result in safeguarding a lot of lives. Even today, there are many courses that are available online, provided by professionals across the world. The basic knowledge of first aid is important because it would help in saving lives, gaining knowledge of using the tools effectively, taking important steps until medical support arrives, and providing comfort to the wounded.
