In Odisha’s Berhampur, a woman dressed in her wedding gown staged a protest outside her groom’s house after he abandoned her at the mandap on their wedding day.
Dimple Dash and Sumeet Sahu were reportedly legally married a while ago at a marriage registrar’s office. On Monday, the families decided to hold a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in the presence of a small number of guests.
When Dimple and her family arrived at the wedding venue, however, there was no sign of the groom and his family. According to the woman’s account, they did not show up for hours and even did not respond to repeated calls and messages.
Instead of waiting at the mandap, Dimple and her mother decided to stage a protest at the in-laws’ home.
“We got our marriage registered on September 7th, 2020. My in-laws have been torturing me since the beginning, and they once locked me in a room upstairs. Previously, my husband had been there for me. However, as time passed, my husband sided with his family, prompting us to file a complaint at the Mahila police station. After that, my father-in-law came to my house and asked that we leave all the bitterness behind and hold a Hindu wedding ceremony,” Dimple Dash said.
“November 22 was set as the wedding date,” she added. We were forced to come here [his house] because my husband did not show up.”
“He [Sumeet] sexually exploited my daughter for several days, and now he hasn’t shown up for the wedding. Is my daughter a commodity to be used and discarded for this family, or what?”, Dimple’s mother said.
The groom and his family were unable to be reached for comment.
The police arrived on the scene after being informed of the dharna. Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP) Pinak Mishra told India Today that a case involving the same couple had previously been registered at the Mahila police station.
“Notices have already been served on the individuals named in the FIR.” “Subsequently, the groom’s family filed a complaint against the bride’s family, and a charge sheet was filed in court,” SP Pinak Mishra said.
Meanwhile, Dimple and her mother accused the police of accepting a bribe from the groom’s family in order to remain silent on the matter.
When asked about the alleged police inaction, SP Pinak Mishra stated, “When a case is under investigation, the role of the police is limited.” We will follow the court’s instructions.”
