Simlipal fast returning to normalcy after cyclone Yaas

After harsh cyclone induced rain for 2 days, Simlipal in the Mayubhanj district is fast returning to normalcy. 

Cyclone Yaas made landfall close to the north of Dhamra port in Bhadrak district and south of Balasore district at around 9 am on Wednesday causing mass devastation. 

Under the effect of the cyclonic storm, Simplipal broke the all-time record leaving many rivers originating from the area in spate disrupting communication at several places. This also triggered flash flood in the river catchments of the 2,750 square km tiger reserve.

River Budhabalanga and its tributaries that run through the district swelled alarmingly and as many as 11 river systems of Similipal saw a sudden rise in water levels.

Apart from Budhabalanga, the water level in other river catchment areas, including Khairi, Bandhan, Khadkei, Khairi, Polpala and other tributaries were also in spate.

The situation was soon brought to control thanks to the dedication of concerned district administration, NDRF personnel, and forest and fire services departments.

As many as 15 teams were deployed in clearance work and restoration, using JCBs, of roads that were washed away by the flash flood in the region.

10 trees are estimated to be uprooted in different parts of the forest on the night of May 26 severing communication. However, it was immediately cleared by the disaster management teams. 

Rescue operation is underway at Astakuanr gram panchayat, Nawna in Barehipani gram panchayat, Godasimilipal, Saruda and Budhabalanga regions by the Fire services and forest officials.

“Many roads in different gram panchayats have been swept away in the flash flood and over 70 houses have been damaged in the rainfall in several villages”, informed Similipal Tiger Reserve Deputy Director, Jashipur Division, Sai Kiran.

Cyclone Yaas: Very Severe Cyclone Weakens After Landfall Near Balasore

Very severe cyclonic storm Yaas has now weakened into a severe cyclone. According to the most recent update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Yaas remained centred over north coastal Odisha about 12:30 PM, around 15 km west southwest of Balasore. Between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., Cyclone Yaas crossed the north Odisha coast roughly 20 kilometres south of Balasore. According to the IMD, the storm crossed with winds of 130-140 kmph, with gusts up to 155 kmph.

Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the IMD’s chief, stated, Yaas, a very severe cyclonic storm, crossed the north Odisha coast between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. today, around 20 kilometres south of Balasore. The wind speed at landfall was 130-140 kmph with gusts up to 150 kmph. The cyclone travelled north north-westwards today after crossing the coast, and as of 11:30 a.m., it was situated 15 kilometres south southwest of Balasore. It’s heading north-northwest right now. In the next three hours, the Cyclone’s intensity is expected to decrease. The wind speed is currently 120-130 km/h, with gusts up to 145 km/h. As the cyclone moves away, the wind speed is expected to drop to 90-100 kmph in the following three hours, with gustiness up to 110 kmph as the cyclone weakens.

This effect will most certainly be felt in Odisha’s interior, particularly in the Mayurbhanj region. The cyclone will weaken further during the next 6 hours, with wind speeds dropping to 60-70 kmph before transforming into a cyclonic storm. It will arrive in Jharkhand tomorrow and will be centred there as a severe depression with winds of 50-60 km/h. In the last 24 hours, various coastal and interior districts have seen significant to very high rainfall due to the cyclone’s effect. Even now, rainfall is occurring in Odisha’s interior areas. In the next 6 hours, we expect heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of Odisha, particularly in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada & Jagatsinghpur.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the interior regions of north Odisha over the next 12 hours. Furthermore, in certain areas, exceptionally heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm is expected. In Bhadrak, Balasore, and neighbouring Medinipur in West Bengal, sea tides will gradually recede but will remain high for the next 3-4 hours. The tides, on the other hand, are expected to be 2 m rather than 4 m.

Cyclone Yaas: Here’s The List Of Do’s And Don’ts As Storm Strengthens

As a severe cyclonic storm approaches the coast and is expected to make landfall tomorrow between North Odisha and West Bengal, the government has begun evacuating people from risky locations to safe places in sensitive districts, as well as preparing for rescue, relief, and restoration efforts.

People usually resort to wrongdoings before and after the cyclone due to a lack of awareness, putting them at risk. People should take extra precautions to avoid such twin tragedies, as the tragedy is looming at a time when the state is striving to recover from the Covid pandemic.

Before, during, and after the cyclone, here is a list of Dos and Don’ts:

1. Ignore rumors, remain calm, don’t panic, and avoid panic buying.

2. Use SMS and keep your phones charged to ensure connectivity.

3. For weather updates, listen to the radio, watch TV, or read the newspaper.

4. Store your documents and valuables in water-resistant containers in a secure location.

5. For safety and survival, prepare an emergency kit with essential items such as a torch, matchbox, soaps, sanitizers, masks, medicines, and candles.

6. Make necessary repairs to your home; don’t leave sharp objects out in the open.

7. Untie the cattle/animals and transport them to a safe location.

8. Take pregnant women to the hospital if their due date is approaching.

When going to cyclone centers, give priority to the elderly, children, infants, Divyangs, and patients.

10. Fishermen should have a radio and extra batteries on hand, as well as be aware of current events.

What to do in the event of a cyclone:

1. Turn off all electrical outlets and turn off the cooking gas supply.

2. Keep doors and windows shut.

 3. If your home is in danger, leave before the cyclone arrives.

4. Turn on the radio/transistor.

5. Drink only boiled/chlorinated water and rely only on official warnings.

Outdoor activities:

1. Do not enter dilapidated or damaged structures.

2. Be aware of broken electric poles and wires.

At cyclone shelter:

1. Maintain as much physical distance as possible while masking your face at all times.

2. Continue to wash your hands with soap or hand wash/sanitize your hands.

3. Stay away from people who are sick with the flu.

4. Dispose of used masks, pads, and other materials in the cyclone center’s dumping bin rather than throwing them outside.

5. Use the cyclone center’s toilets rather than defecate in open areas.
