Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Admitted To AIIMS Due To Post-Covid Complications

Following post-Covid complications, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal is admitted to the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. In April, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, 61, contracted the coronavirus.

After recovering from Covid-19, Ramesh Pokhriyal returned to work. Following problems, he was taken to AIIMS. More information on his treatment at AIIMS has not been released.

On April 21, Ramesh Pokhriyal tested positive for Covid-19. The Union Minister of Education announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19 on his official Twitter account.

Ramesh Pokhriyal wrote in a tweet, “I’m writing to let you know that I tested positive for Covid. My physicians have prescribed medicine and treatment for me. I urge everybody who has lately come into contact with me to be tested. “

Meanwhile, sources told India Today TV that a decision on CBSE board examinations by the education ministry is doubtful today. The Centre has requested two days from the Supreme Court to make a decision on the CBSE board exams.

The Peculiar Case of Missing Covid-19 Doses

India today is facing an acute shortage of vaccine to fight against Covid-19. While the government has announced vaccines for all age groups above 18, most of the masses haven’t received their first doses.

Delhi has even stopped vaccination for the 18-44 age group. There are reports of clashes at primary health care centres and hospitals due to the excessive rush of aspiring beneficiaries.

While some state governments have had global tenders floated, they haven’t got any clear cut response.

What’s peculiar is that India has been vaccinating at a lower rate compared to its domestic production of Covid-19 vaccines. Demand is huge, but the pace of vaccination is slower than declared production and supply capacity.

Earlier this month when the Supreme Court sought a response from the government on Covid-19 vaccination, the Centre filed an affidavit saying 8.5 crore doses of vaccines were being produced monthly in India.

According to the Centre’s affidavit, the Serum Institute of India (SII), which produces AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine as Covishield, is producing around 6.5 crore doses in a month. The Bharat Biotech, which produces indigenous Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin, is producing 2 crore doses a month.

These firms individually have also stated their production of the vaccine doses in the same zone. The SII has said it produces 6-7 crore doses a month. The Bharat Biotech said it was to produce 2 crore doses in April and increase the production to 3 crores doses in May.

This means that India’s existing production capacity of the two Covid-19 vaccines is not lower than 8.5 crore doses a month. This translates into a daily production and supply of 27.5-28.5 lakh (depending on whether a month is taken as of 30 days or 31 days) Covid-19 vaccine doses a day on an average.

Currently, India has stopped the export of Covid-19 vaccines, which several countries have complained about as the decision has disrupted their vaccination plan.

Still, India administered 4.1 crore doses between May 1 and May 23. According to data compiled by covid19india.org, India had administered 15,49,89,635 doses as of April 30. By May 23, the total vaccine doses administered increased to 19,60,51,962.

This comes out as an average of 17.85 lakh doses being administered a day in May. At this rate, India may administer another 1.42 crore by May 31.

The total vaccination for May would be a little over 5.5 crores, much lower than the declared capacity of production. The gap is about 3 crore doses.

This leads us to the question, what is happening to the doses if not used for the benefit of people?

Odisha Constitutes High-Level Committee To Combat Covid Surge In The State

The government created a high-level advisory committee on Saturday to tackle and arrest the current trend of Covid-19 Pandemic, as the coronavirus continues to spread its tentacles far and wide across the State.

“The panel, which will include senior doctors and scientists from across the country including Dr Ramakant Panda and Dr. Devi Shetty, will be led by Dr. Srinath Reddy,” said Odisha Chief Secretary Suresh Mahapatra while making the announcement.

“The committee will be in charge of recommending interventions to the State government in the fight against the virus, vaccination, and dealing with a potential third wave of the pandemic,” Mahapatra said.

He confirmed that the State government would act on the advice of the high-level advisory committee and take immediate measures to enforce the body’s recommendations.

“A global e-tender has been floated for procurement of 3.8 crore doses of vaccines, and the supply is expected to be completed within four months,” he said while announcing the global vaccine procurement tender.

“Odisha is the first state in the country to put out a global tender for vaccine procurement,” he said. If good bidding occurs, we will be able to purchase vaccines after May 28.” “The positivity rate in 10 districts is flattening, and in some other districts it is decreasing,” the Chief Secretary said, sharing information about the current Covid-19 situation in the State. For us, this is a huge relief.” The Chief Secretary also urged people follow every guideline of Covid-19 in order to prevent the virus from spreading.

“As many as 8,000 patients were treated at government Covid hospitals during the peak period last year, and the figure has now risen to about 15,000, with around 3,000 patients in ICUs or on ventilators. Given the severity of the dangerous virus, I strongly advise people to stay indoors and avoid going outside unless its absolutely necessary” Mahapatra suggested.

Odisha govt floats global tender for procurement of 3.80 crores covid -19 vaccines

As corona cases are increasing rapidly, different states are adopting the lockdown and shutdown concept to combat against covid -19.

Meanwhile, the Odisha government has gone one step ahead in this regard. Odisha Government has floated a global e-Tender for the supply of COVID -19 vaccine to the state.

Odisha State Medical Corporation (OSMC) has invited online global bids through an e-Tender portal for supply the 3.80 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine from manufacturers”, informed the Odisha government in a notice.

The bidders will not be permitted to withdraw their bid after the opening of the technical bid, within the minimum bid validity period of 180 days and also after accepting the Letter of Intent. Successful bidders will be provided with online tracking facility for knowing goods delivery status at the consignee location and progress on payment by OSMCL.

The state government has approved the proposal to float a global tender for acquiring coronavirus vaccine on May 10.

The Odisha government has constituted a seven-member State-level Committee to monitor vaccination and controls the cases headed by Dr Srinatha Reddy.

As per I and PR Odisha has reported 11.803 cases in the last 24 hours while 21 deaths.

Senior citizens to get doorstep sample collection facility in Bhubaneswar

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation or BMC has announced a doorstep sample collection facility for senior citizens having COVID symptoms or those suspecting an infection.

They can simply dial 1929 to avail of such provision.

This process includes sharing their number and residential address. A van will then arrive to collect samples for the COVID-19 test as informed by BMC Commissioner Sanjay Singh.

Senior citizens, who are living alone, will be provided with a pick-and-drop facility by the BMC for COVID-19 vaccination. Beneficiaries can dial 1929 and get the facility, said Singh.

Earlier this week Ganjam collector informed that the Berhampur Municipal Corporation will start COVID-19 vaccination at the doorstep for senior citizens from Monday.

This provision has been made after a certain petition filed in the Orissa High court seeking judicial intervention to ensure doorstep vaccination for senior citizens and physically challenged people.

Bharat Biotech Inclined To Invite Other Firms To Ramp Up Covaxin Production, Says Centre

The Central government and Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech are inclined to invite other companies that want to manufacture COVAXIN in a bid to ramp up vaccine production, said NITI Aayog member Dr VK Paul on Thursday, amid reports of coronavirus vaccine shortages in various states. COVAXIN, on the other hand, can only be made in Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3) laboratories, according to Dr. Paul.

“According to people, Covaxin should be issued to other companies to manufacture. When we discussed it with the Covaxin manufacturing company (Bharat Biotech), they were very enthusiastic. A live virus is inactivated in this vaccine, which is only done in BSL3 laboratories. This isn’t something that any other organization has. We extend an open invitation to any company interested in participating. Companies interested in producing Covaxin should collaborate. The Centre will assist in increasing capacity “Dr. Paul stated the following.

In his presentation, the NITI Aayog member highlighted that one-third of the population aged 45 and above are now vaccinated.

“We are pleased to report that one-third of those aged 45 and above are protected. Those aged 45 and above account for 88 percent of all deaths. So, you can imagine how much of a difference it would have made if this population’s risk of death had been reduced “, Paul added.

Dr. Paul highlighted the country’s most recent achievement, revealing that nearly 18 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in India, while the amount in the US is about 26 crores, putting India in third place in the world’s overall vaccination tally.

The Centre’s decision to invite other companies to manufacture COVAXIN comes at a time when many state governments and opposition parties have called for increase in vaccine production by sharing formulas with other capable pharma companies.

What’s “Black Fungus”? Know About Its Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention.

As India’s health system struggles to cope with the pandemic, a rare “black fungus” that invades the brain is gradually being found in vulnerable people, particularly those with Covid-19.

On Sunday, the health ministry issued an advisory on how to treat the infection. According to data from state-run hospitals, about 300 cases of this disease had been registered in four cities in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad.

According to Prof Peter Collignon, a member of the World Health Organization’s advisory committee on antibiotic resistance and infectious diseases, “Black Fungus” also known as “Mucormycosis” is a dangerous infection with a high mortality rate that requires surgery and a number of medications to treat it once a person gets affected from it.

What is “Black Fungus” or “Mucormycosis”?

Mucormycosis, also known as the black fungus, is a rare but deadly fungal infection caused by a group of moulds known as mucormycetes, which are found in the atmosphere naturally.

The fungal spores are normally inhaled, and while most people’s immune systems will ward them off, but those with weakened immune systems, such as diabetes or leukaemia, or those that take drugs that reduce the body’s ability to fight germs, such as steroids, are more likely to become infected form this.

What are the symptoms?

Pain and redness around the eyes and nose, a fever, headache, diarrhoea, bloody diarrhoea, black and bloody nasal discharge, pain on one side of the face and in the sinuses, blackish discoloration over the nose, tooth pain, and painful and blurred vision are just a few of the symptoms.

Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, immunosuppression by steroids, prolonged ICU stay, malignancy and voriconazole therapy are being categorized as major risk factors for this disease by the ICMR health ministry guidelines. And if anyone wants to confirm a diagnosis, fluid and tissue samples can be collected to be sure about the infection.

Why is it appearing in India?

Covid-19 was setting the stage for the virus to spread. The infection was compromising people’s immune systems, and mucormycosis was being seen in patients with diabetes in particular. People with Covid-19 were being given a lot of high-dose steroids if they end up in intensive care and they were given the steroids to treat inflammation, but these steroids were suppressing the immune system too and the current pressurized, crowded and cramped environment of hospitals in India is even worsening the spread of this fungus.

What is its treatment?

Mucormycosis is a dangerous infection that requires treatment with antifungal medications such as amphotericin B, posaconazole, or isavuconazole. Amphotericin B, posaconazole, and isavuconazole are administered intravenously (amphotericin B, posaconazole, and isavuconazole) or orally (posaconazole, isavuconazole) (posaconazole, isavuconazole). Fluconazole, voriconazole, and echinocandins are not effective against the fungi that cause mucormycosis. Mucormycosis sometimes necessitates surgery to remove contaminated tissue.

How it can be prevented?

When touching soil, moss, or manure, the Indian Council of Medical Research and the Union Health Ministry have released an advisory advising people to wear shoes, long trousers, long sleeve shirts, and gloves. People should also maintain personal hygiene, make sure their diabetes is under control if they have it, and medical practitioners should stop using immune-suppressing medications like steroids as soon as they are ready, according to the ministry.

7 Oxygen Plants To Be Set Up In Odisha By DRDO

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and HLL Infra Tech Services Ltd  (HITES) will set up additional Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) medical oxygen generation plants within public health facilities across the country, including seven in Odisha.

According to reports, the DRDO plans to construct and commission seven oxygen plants in Odisha. The National Highways Authority (NHAI) of India will be in charge of the plant’s civil and electrical work.

The plants will be built in Bhadrak, Boudh, Cuttack, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Koraput, and Nayagarh, each with a 1000-litre-per-minute oxygen generation facility (LPM) so that during the Covid-19 pandemic, they can ensure that medical oxygen is available at all times.

It’s worth mentioning that the DRDO will commission 400 sites across the region, while HITES will commission 181. States have been asked to take urgent action in conjunction with the relevant agencies in order to build and commission the plants.

But the best part is, there is a community of some of the most dedicated professionals who have been working hard day and night with a lot of will and selflessness to keep us safe and make situations better for us in these lockdowns, may it be the devoted medical professionals including the doctors and every medical staff falling under the hierarchy chain, the highly committed policemen and the army of our country who irrespective of what their families are going through these days are still on their duty to protect us from external powers, or the municipality workers and cleaning staffs who regularly are keeping the things, places, environment sanitized for us,  or the delivery guys who are making things easy for us by conferring us with necessity goods or the socially responsible workers who are feeding the poor and animals in this situations and our government of states and centre who genuinely are working on producing vaccine and giving the shot to every single human of this nation, trying to eradicate it getting things back to normal.

But how can we, who are not part of any of these heroic jobs and common citizen as of now, can contribute our best in this fight? We can by staying at home and saving ourselves from being affected. It’s very tough for some people to stay at home whose lives run on daily wages, they have to go out and work we can’t stop them to feed their families unless we come up with sources to help them which could genuinely keep them at home, but if we are financially capable to sustain the shutdown with whatever limited resources we have, one should avoid going out for any work or any profession he’s in for whatever the amount of money the work is paying. We need food to live but more than that we need a life to enjoy that food. So don’t go out unnecessarily unless there is any sort of genuine reason like a medical emergency or getting yourself vaccinated. Stay at home enjoy this time with your family, spend time with your parents you don’t know how lucky you are having them at this time when many have lost theirs in this pandemic, play with your children, video call your friends and loved ones,  learn new habits, expand your knowledge logically and creatively, watch TVs, play video games do all those things that you loved to do when you had no idea of this world which was beyond your childhood, respect this time the universe has given you, take this phase positively. Show your gratitude and love by staying at home to all those people working 24*7 tirelessly for someone else’s survival who have no work with, who are not even their own, by staying at home and keeping yourself safe you are even going to help the daily wagers who anyway have to go out to work for their survival, if not financially but by saving a bed and some oxygen for them, which they might lose for a financially stronger person who got covid by going out needlessly, this would be our contribution towards the nation the society and to humanity.

Drive In Covid-19 Vaccination Begins In Bhubaneswar’s Esplanade Mall For Those Above 45 Years

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, inspired by the Mumbai model, opened its first drive-in coronavirus vaccination center in the capital on Saturday for all those aged 45 and above. The mass vaccination campaign began in the parking lot of the Esplanade Shopping Mall in Bhubaneswar, near Rasulgarh Square. Residents who had previously administered their first dose of the vaccine at private hospitals or government facilities in Odisha were instructed to travel to the shopping mall’s parking lot to receive their second dose.

 

The drive-in appointment was for the second dose of Covid-19 vaccine for people aged 45 and above. The vaccination was administered at the shopping mall’s exit points. Those in the car were instructed to remain inside. People waited outside the parking lot for a 30-minute observation period after receiving vaccinations, then drove away until they felt safe.

On Saturday, 400 slots were accessible, with 500 slots available per day from May 10 to 15, according to reports. Those who have reserved slots and are interested in the facility can drive their vehicle to the Esplanade Mall parking area, according to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation. And this whole process was overlooked  BMC Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhry.
