Sprinter Dutee Chand Files Case Against Journalist, Seeks Rs 5 Cr In Damages

Dutee Chand, an Olympic sprinter, filed a lawsuit against a journalist, the Editor of a Web-Channel, Sudhanshu Sekhar Rout, and RTI activist Pradip Pradhan for allegedly causing her stress during her participation in the just concluded Tokyo Olympics 2020.

She filed an FIR against them at the Mahila Police Station in Bhubaneswar, citing harassment by them in the form of news reports regarding her character and performance during the Games.

Meanwhile, Chand filed a civil suit in Bhubaneswar seeking Rs 5 crore in damages from the journalist for defaming her and causing her to lose advertising contracts with many major firms.

During a press conference on Thursday, Chand said that the duo’s news reports had greatly harmed her and caused her to experience stress, which had a negative impact on her performance at the Games.

It’s worth noting that Chand failed to qualify for the quarterfinals of the women’s 200m event at the Tokyo Olympics on August 2.

Dutee placed eighth in heat 4 on track 2 of the Olympic Stadium with her season’s best time of 23.85 seconds, which was not enough to qualify her for the semifinals. She wasn’t even close to her personal best of 23.00 seconds.

After failing to break the automatic qualification standard of 11.15 seconds, the 25-year-old qualified for the Olympics in Tokyo based on World Rankings.
