The Prime Minister promised a slew of benefits for children affected by the current COVID pandemic. The Prime Minister stated when introducing these measures that children are the country’s future, and that the government would take all necessary steps to help and protect them so that they grow into strong citizens with a bright future.

In such challenging times, the PM added, it is our responsibility as a society to care for our children and instill hope for a bright future. Under the ‘PM-CARES for Children’ programme, any child who has lost both parents or a surviving parent, legal guardian/adoptive parents as a result of Covid 19 will be supported. He further stated that the actions proposed are only achievable as a result of generous contributions to the PM CARES Fund, which would help India battle COVID-19.

Fixed Deposit in the name of the child:

When each child reaches the age of 18, PM CARES will contribute through a specially developed programme to build a corpus of Rs 10 lakh for each child. This collection includes the following things:

  • will be utilised to provide a monthly financial support/ stipend starting at the age of 18 for the following five years to cover his or her personal needs while pursuing higher education.
  • When he or she reaches the age of 23, he or she will get the corpus amount in one single sum to spend for personal and professional purposes.

School Education: For children under 10 years

  • Any Central Government residential school, such as Sainik School or Navodaya Vidyalaya, will admit the child.
  • If the child is to be watched by a guardian, grandparents, or extended relatives, he or she will be enrolled as a day scholar at the local Kendriya Vidyalaya or a private school.
  • If the child is admitted to a private school, the PM CARES will pay the fees in accordance with RTE guidelines.
  • PM CARES will cover the cost of uniforms, textbooks, and notebooks.

Support for Higher Education:

  • According to the existing Education Loan standards, the child would be assisted in acquiring an education loan for professional courses / Higher Education in India. The PM CARES will cover the interest on this loan.
  • Under Central or State Government Schemes, such children would be given a scholarship comparable to the tuition fees / course fees for undergraduate/ vocational degrees as per government rules. PM CARES will give an equivalent scholarship to children who are not qualified under the existing scholarship system.

Health Insurance:

  • Under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme (PM-JAY), all children would be enrolled as beneficiaries, with a health insurance cover of Rs. 5 lakhs.
  • PM CARES will cover the premiums for these children until they reach the age of 18.
