Odisha To Soon Have Beach Shacks At 6 Locations, Stated OTDC

by Swati Sahoo

Tourists visiting Odisha beaches will soon be able to enjoy the best of food, chilled beverages, music, and the sea, all in one location, similar to Goa.

As a result, the state administration has chosen to set up beach shacks at six different beaches. Official sources stated on Saturday that the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) has invited applications for the operation of shacks on the state’s six major beaches.

“Not only will this draw tourists from beyond Odisha, but locals who frequently visit the beaches will also have a good time. The beach shacks will provide a pleasant atmosphere, excellent food, chilled alcohol, and, most significantly, a backdrop of white dunes and gushing waves,” said state tourism secretary Vishal Dev to IANS.

Initially, shacks will be built in six sites, with the number of shacks to be raised subsequently, he said.

The government has decided to allow five shacks on the Puri-Konark marine route in Puri district and five more in Ganjam district’s Gopalpur beach.

Three shacks will be built on the Talsari-Udaipur beach front in Balasore district, and the same number will be built on the Paradeep sea beach in Jagatsinghpur district.

At least two shacks will be built on the beaches of Chandipur in Balasore and Pati Sonapur in Ganjam.

The tourism department is identifying suitable land for the shacks, which will be allotted on a three-year lease basis, in cooperation with the revenue and forest departments.

The state government will provide common infrastructure such as power, water, and sewage to the beach shacks that will be built in clusters in each of the locations.

The Excise Policy, 2021, currently allows serving liquor in beach shacks for tourism promotion. The OTDC will get an excise department licence for each location for the selected operators, subject to payment of an annual charge, a licence fee, and other fees.

The chosen operators will be responsible for developing the beach shacks on their own dime. They must ensure that the personnel hired are well-trained, courteous, and free of contagious diseases. The operators have been instructed to hire at least 75% of their manpower from the local community in order to provide jobs for locals.

The operator will be instructed to take corrective action if the quality of the facility/service is not determined to be sufficient. Furthermore, if the service quality is proven to be bad on a regular basis, the operator will be barred from operating, according to the sources.

Odisha boasts a 482-kilometer coastline with stunning beaches scattered over six districts with tremendous tourist potential.
