Why do we often neglect our mental health needs?

We claim to be advanced in everything but are we? Well, I don’t think so. A lot of people are reluctant to understand the basic things and are unable to address each other’s mental health needs. People still think mental issues are a sign of weakness and somehow is our own fault and that physical issues are way more legitimate than mental or emotional issues. But its high time that we stop thinking like that. Mental issues are as legitimate as physical issues. Seeking help doesn’t make you less of a human. Its absolutely normal. Simply talking about it will go a long way. In our fast-paced world, we always tend to seek quick, simple answers to complex problems. We look for connection with others by compulsively checking social media instead of reaching out to people in the real world. We prefer taking some pill rather talking and tackling the underlying issues. But people forget that humans have emotional needs and that they need company. We’re not meant to survive, let alone thrive, in isolation. We need to enjoy life and for that we need to have a good mental health. Phone calls and social networks have their place, but nothing can beat the stress-busting, mood-boosting power of quality face-to-face time with other people. But that’s something we ignore the most. What exactly makes us to do that? Life will be so much easier if we just talk. But the society has structured itself in such a way that we limit ourselves. We often think about ‘what will people think?’ But who are these people that we are neglecting our mental health for? What’s more important than taking care of yourself? What’s more important than being in peace? Not neglecting mental health is something we all need to work on. Its important to take steps to improve our mental health and take care of our emotional well-being. Neglecting it won’t let you stay in peace. It is a much bigger problem than people think it is. It will only make you suffer. Talk. Share. Discuss.

Mental Health – Let’s Talk about it

Its high time that we start talking about mental health as a very common topic of conversation. It is something that makes an individual realize his or her own abilities, how to cope with stress, productivity skills, etc. Not having good mental health can lead to mental illness. It is just a physical illness of the brain that leads to behavioural changes, unnatural thinking, emotional instability, anxiety disorder, depression, etc which makes it a little more difficult to deal with life. As research suggests, it can be caused due to a few conditions such as genetics, brain chemistry, brain structure, experiencing trauma or having another medical condition, like heart disease. It affects a lot of people every year. They can be your family members, friends, people you know, anyone. 19% of the adult population, 46% of teenagers and 13% of children are affected by mental illnesses each year. But do these people receive proper treatment? Well, hardly any due to the stigma attached to mental health.

Although the general perception about mental illness has improved over the past decades, studies show that the stigma against mental illness is still significant, largely due to media stereotypes and lack of education, and that people tend to link negative stigmas to mental health conditions at a very high rate than to other diseases and disabilities, such as cancer, heart disease or liver problems.

But mental health is something that affects everything. Starting from how you think to how you behave in a regular basis, from overcoming challenges to building relationships. It affects you as a whole. Setbacks and hardships will always be difficult to recover from.

But having a stable mental health is very important. Staying healthy is great but staying emotionally and mentally healthy is the best place that one can be in. Being free of depression, anxiety, or other psychological issues and having the absence of mental illness, mental health refers to the presence of positive characteristics and a great state of mind which is highly important.

A Study Revealed Loopholes Of Online Learning In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Contrary to the government’s claim that 33 percent of 60 lakh students aged 6 to 14 who pursue a primary education in Odisha and attend online classes, a study found that only about 6 lakh students receive digital learning. A study entitled ‘Paused Classrooms’, conducted by Save the Children and the Odisha RTE Forum, was released on Wednesday.

The study aimed to understand the state of education, especially pre-school education and primary education during the Covid-19 period in Odisha, which said that not only did the pandemic slow down children’s learning but also created digital disparities between students in urban and rural areas of the State. It pointed out that the Department of School Education and Mass education had not addressed the issues of infrastructure and connectivity in the rural areas of the State before launching an online education program.

The study revealed that the Odisha Shiksha Sanjog program, which focused on e-teaching during the epidemic, could not cover even the PCs of 50 schoolchildren outside the Khurda district. The program was launched by the Department of School and Mass Education last year to engage students in the WhatsApp group learning program. This apart, the pandemic has brought to a complete halt mother tongue-based learning for tribal children.

While 22 out of 63 communities in the State are studying the curriculum in their mother tongue until class 5 and Odia and English are not heard in it, the study found that there is no specific program for the government through online learning. in their own language. No elementary school student currently has access to material in his or her mother tongue. Odisha RTE Forum coordinator Anil Pradhan said online education was also a new concept for many teachers who were technically weak.

“The online learning system was also affected during the pandemic because teachers were unfamiliar with e-learning and found it difficult to communicate with students. Therefore, they could not conduct online classes regularly and efficiently,” he said. Other than that, the process of online learning remains one-sided without communication space or moments to eliminate doubts and follow-up by teachers. The study was conducted in 15 districts.( government’s claim)

Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves Tour: Odisha is like a book lying on the topmost shelf, dusted and unturned pages with a vast and rich history. Filled with waterfalls, beaches, temples, and some lost Jain history. Odisha was previously known as Kaling, was termed as Anarya Bhumis, which means land without Dharma. It was when Jain termed Kalinga as one of the Arya Bhumis, which means where Dharma exists.

One of the most relevant examples of Jain culture is Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves built by king Kharavela. The visit to these historical caves during the rain was the epitome of beauty. Its Popularly believed that these caves were residential blocks for Jain monks.

Udayagiri and Khandagiri are on two adjacent hills. There is no entry time and fee for Khandagiri but to visit Udyagiri the entry time is 9 am and the ticket costs around INR 25 per person. Both close around 6 pm. One of my friends and I reached the place around 8:20 am and begun exploring Khandagiri, let me tell you if you are stepping out to visit such rocky places after a long time first 10 minutes is going to be a little suffocating to walk on such rocky stairs but after a while, you will be comfortable enough to walk easily. There are 15 caves in Khandagiri. After a good walk, we decided to sit on a rock. We could see the rain approaching, it was soothing. You will find lots of monkeys. They are friendly and will not harm you until you mess with them.

The next spot was Udyagiri, talking about Udyagiri, it is a place of amazing carved caves which project the incredible history and culture of Odisha. There are 18 caves in Udayagiri. There are stairs, but if you like adventure take the rocky path, it’s fun to reach the top through it. The city seems much better and peaceful with no noise of vehicles from the top. Buildings waving from behind the trees are a different vibe. The only thing which disappoints is people scribbling on walls of caves.

This place is a book on its own. You get to know about Jain culture, history, inscriptions, stories, Carvings, and Kings & Queens of that era. Such historical places also have a lot of stories attached to them. Udayagiri and Khandagiri have many mysteries and stories. One of them is, some locals believe there are some mysterious sounds audible after 6 pm but again it is still not proved.

It is located at a distance of 9 km from Bhubaneswar Railway Station, one can visit it at any season, but winter and the rainy season are the preferable season.

8 Avatars of Ganesha That Aware Us Against Negative Habits

“ एकदंताय वक्रतुण्डाय गौरीतनयाय धीमहि ।
गजेशानाय भालचन्द्राय श्रीगणेशाय धीमहि ॥ ”

The divine power that is evoked before every beginning is the elephant headed God, Ganesha, the son of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. He is the symbol of knowledge, wisdom, new beginnings, success and remover of obstacles. Lord Ganesha took different forms to warn humankind of destructive emotions that can cause harm to the self and the surrounding. On the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, here are the eight avatars of the Lord and the story that follows.

1. Vakratunda

Vakratunda is the incarnation of Lord Ganesha to free humans from the evil spirit of Matsara, meaning jealousy and selfishness. Matsarasura was a demon who came into existence due to the carelessness of Lord Indra. When Lord Indra rejected him, he was filled with jealousy and vowed to conquer the three worlds. He performed severe penance and achieved the boon of fearlessness by impressing Lord Shiva. Along with his sons Vishaypriya and Sundarpriya, he caused devastation everywhere. Thus, all the Gods prayed to the Lord with a curved trunk, Vakratunda, who killed the sons of Matsarasura. The aftermath doomed the demon and he realised his mistake. Later he turned to a devotee of Vakratunda.

Jealousy overwhelms our minds the moment we sense a loss. Thus emerges the want to compensate for that loss, giving birth to selfish motives, and the path of desolation is paved. Lord Ganesha in his Vakratunda avatar spreads the message of being down to earth despite acquiring all the powers, and to develop understanding power instead of comparison between oneself and others.

2. Ekadanta

The guru of Asuras, Shukracharya had a brother known as Chyavana. His son Madasura was fond of alcohol. One day he told his uncle, as well as his teacher, about his ambition to rule the three realms of the universe. Shukracharya gave him a special mantra, “Hrim”, to please the goddess. After getting blessed by the superpowers, high on alcohol, he set to rule the three worlds. Invoked by the gods, Ekadanta emerged as a saviour. In front of the valourant form of Lord Ganesha, he lost his courage and surrendered.

The engagement with intoxication can fill one with irresistible pride. Pride makes one feel that he is the best and no one is above him. This arrogance blinds the person and leads him to his own destruction. Lord Ganesha in his Ekadanta avatar preaches to give up pride.

3. Mahodara

Some believe Mohasura was Daitya Raj, the king of Asuras because of his devotion to the Sun God. Others believe in the legend that Shiva was in deep meditation and the gods needed him. The gods asked Parvati to break his meditation. So, Parvati took an appealing configuration to distract Shiva. When Shiva came out of trance, Parvati removed her charming mould. This form went on to become Mohasura, the embodiment of delusion and confusion. Devastated by his activities, the gods resorted to God Surya. He advised them to please Mahodara for rescuing them. Later Mahodara descended and fought with Mohasura. Lord Vishnu suggested Mohasura to stop the war and Mahodara would forgive him. Understanding the words of Lord Vishnu, and realising the powers of Lord Mahodara, Mohasura gave up war. Later he became an ardent devotee of Mahodara.

Confusion and delusion can lead to unwanted repercussions. Mahodara is the formation of Ganesha which makes us aware to come out of delusion and accept reality, the only truth.

4. Gajanana

The treasurer of heaven, Kubera, once visited Kailash, and there he saw Goddess Parvati. Her charismatic appearance filled Kubera with lust. His lustful look enraged Goddess Parvati, afraid of her anger Kubera started trembling with fear. The energy of fear and lust transformed into Lobhasura. This asura took classes from Shukracharya, and gained invincible powers by performing penance. This was the time when Rishi Raibhya suggested the gods pray for Gajanana. The moment this avatar of Lord Ganesha appeared, Lobhasura lost all his courage to continue the conquest of the three realms and asked for forgiveness.

Lust is a poison for our souls. It is another self-destructive force which makes us greedy. Wanting to get more, harms not only the surrounding but also the inside. Lord Gajanana teaches us to be satisfied with what we have as satisfaction is the only key to happiness.

5. Lambodara

It was the time for churning of the ocean to get divine ambrosia. On one side there were demons and on the other the gods. The divine drink if acquired by the asuras would be misused. So, Lord Vishnu took an alluring embodiment of Mohini to distract the asuras. Unfortunately, Lord Shiva was deeply enchanted by Mohini’s looks. When Vishnu returned back to his normal appearance, Shiva became sad and angry. This energy took the form of Krodhasura, who followed the same routine as other asuras. He took classes from Shukracharya, pleased God, gained enough powers, and started misusing it. Hence Ganesha took the build of Lambodara. He had a potbelly large enough to contain all the anger of Krodhasura. Later this demon of anger became the follower of Lambodara.

Anger is the opposite of calmness. A mind that is encompassed with anger is not effective in action. Things done with annoyance only make it worse. Hence, the framework Lambodara of Lord Ganesha tells us to keep our mind in control and stay free of anger.

6. Vikata

Kamasura, the demon of desire and trickery was the reason for havoc in all the three worlds. His desire to rule everyone was at the top. While everyone was suffering from his wrath, sage Mugdala advised the gods to chant “OM” in Mayuresa Kshetra. So, Vikata, another guise of Lord Ganesha, seated on a peacock, came to their rescue. He defeated Kamasura and saved everyone from suffering.

Lord Ganesha, in his Vikata avatar creates the image of desire blurring our vision to the extent of burning our own conscience.

7. Vighnaraja

A handsome boy, born from the energy of Goddess Parvati’s laughter was named “mama” meaning “mine”. Taught by Parvati to follow the path of righteousness, he was an ardent supporter of goodwill and was deeply devoted to Ganesha. Sambara, a demon, lures him to enter the monstrous world, thus converting Mama to Mamasura. He overthrows the gods and starts his reign in Swargaloka. The gods summon Vighnaraja, the remover of all obstacles to save them from the demon. The Lord arrives on Sheshnaag, and frees Mamasura from the obsession with ruling.

The Vighnaraja form of Ganesha awakens humankind to stay away from obsession, as it is harmful for people around and also destroys the within.

8. Dhumravarna

Lord Brahma, gave Lord Surya the authority over the world of actions. Since, the world revolved under the cycle of Karma, this arose the pride in Surya. Ahamkarasura was born from the ego of the Sun God. He started causing havoc, and to save the world from chaos, Lord Ganesha arrived on Mooshika in his last disposition of Dhumravarna. He defeated the demon of ego and restored the tranquillity in the universe.

Ego is yet another weapon of self-destruction. It has the power to break the strongest of bonds and weaken the most powerful mind. When hovering over someone, it has the strength to show the most wrong direction to achieve success. Thus, the Dhumravarna avatar of Lord Ganesha enlightens us to give up ego and spread love.

The Colourful History Of Bhubaneswar

The city which has been changed drastically over the last 5 years in terms of administration, IT, education and tourism sector, Bhubaneswar was ranked as the best place to do business in India by the World Bank in 2014. Bhubaneswar has emerged as one of the fastest-growing, important trading and commercial hub in eastern India. Even now the city is being compared with other foreign metropolitan cities. So let me take you through back in time how it all started.

Today’s smart city Bhubaneswar got it’s name from “Tribhubaneswara” or “Bhubaneswara” (literally “Lord of the Earth”), the name of Shiva, the god of the Lingaraja temple. Bhubaneswar was built as a modern city by German architect Otto Königsberger with wide streets, gardens, and parks. Although part of the city followed this plan, it grew rapidly in the next few decades, overcoming the planning process.

Bhubaneswar is located near the ruins of Sisupalgarh, the ancient capital of the former province of Kalinga. Dhauli, near Bhubaneswar, was the site of the Kalinga War 262-261 BCE, when Mauryan Emperor Ashoka invaded and occupied Kalinga. One of the most comprehensive instructions of the Mauryan Emperor, Ashoka, from between 272 and 236 BCE, remains engraved on a rock, 8 Kilometres southwest of the present city. The Legislative Assembly of Odisha was moved from Cuttack to Bhubaneswar in 1949.

After the decline of the Mauryan Empire, the area came under the control of the Mahameghavahana dynasty, whose dynasty best known for the Kharavela. His Hathigumpha inscription is found in the caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri near Bhubaneswar. The area was then ruled by several kings, including the Satavahanas, Guptas, Matharas, and Shailodbhavas.

By the seventh century, the Somavamshi or Keshari empires established their empire in the area, and they built many temples. After the Kesharis, the Eastern Gangas ruled the Kalinga area until the 14th century CE. Their capital, Kalinganagara, was in modern-day Bhubaneswar City.

After them, Mukunda Deva of the Bhoi dynasty – the last Hindu ruler of the area as far as Maratha – built many religious buildings in the area. Most of the oldest temples in Bhubaneswar were built between the 8th and 12th centuries, under the influence of Shaiva. The Ananta Vasudeva Temple is the only ancient Vishnu temple in the city. In 1568, the Afrikaner kingdom, originally from Afghanistan, gained a foothold. During their reign, most of the temples and buildings were either destroyed or disfigured.

In the 16th century, the area came under the control of the Mughal. The Maratha, a successor of the Mughals in the mid-18th century, encouraged the movement to the region. In 1803, the area came under British colonial rule, and was part of the Bengal Presidency (until 1912), in the province of Bihar and Orissa (1912-1936) and in Orissa Province (1936-1947). The capital of the British province of Orissa Province was Cuttack, which was in danger of flooding and suffering from space. As a result, on September 30, 1946, a motion was passed to move the new capital to the Odisha Provincial Legislature. After India’s independence, the foundation of the new capital was laid by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on April 13, 1948.

From teenagers to adults this song, this series holds a special place in everyone’s heart for sure. So as a typical F.R.I.E.N.D.S fan we are here for you to tell why we love this and if you can relate, we are on the same team mate.

Story of friendship:

We all hearted how these six people, being so different from each other became friends and shared a bond which we crave. This series gave us some serious friendship goals to dream about.

“Can this be more funny?”:

Feeling upset or frustrated? ” F.R.I.E.N.D.S” has your back always. You cannot hold your laughter for too long if you are watching it. From Chandler Bing’s sarcastic lines to Ross Gellar’s obsession over dinosaurs your mood will cheer up soon once you are into it.

Perfect Relation-SHIPS to drool for:

If you are F.R.I.E.N.D.S fan one of the utmost reason watching it in repeat mode is we absolutely love the relationship- chemistry the pairs have in the show. From MONDLER TO ROSCHEL even joey with his triple cheese pizza makes us drool over. Also remember the time Monica proposed to chandler * cries in corner

Perfect-O-cast:

I don’t know whether the story is written visualizing the cast members or it’s just a mere coincidence but no one can fit in these characters better than these six people. From Mr. Bing’s iconic comic timing to Rachel green’s oh so bratsy brat moments and how can we forget Pheobe’s weird yet perfect comebacks, this series has it all.

“OH MY FASHION!”:

Who didn’t drool over Rachel’s that famous 90’s haircut or her wardrobe or Monica’s formal yet classy suits. Few of us must have searched in pinterest where to get those dreamy outfits * count me in. We absolutely love-love each character’s dressing style and carrying it with ‘oh so glamorous’ mode.

JOEY alert:

How can we ignore the fact that Matt De Blanc is one of our favorite character as Joey?

We all have our part of joey when it comes to love for food. From “how you doinn” to “Joey doesn’t share food” this person has successfully won over our hearts each time he smiled

Also we cannot help but mention Chandler’s dance has its OSCARY moment to laugh over.

Lessons to remember:

While this show made us laugh it also has few lessons to teach. Being a 90’s show few things were considered as taboo in those times like multiple divorce, breaking a marriage off, surrogacy, single motherhood even adoption while this series showed it all breaking the general so called stereotypes.

6 people – Story of life a lifetime:

F.R.I.E.N.D.S is one of those shows which will make you laugh – cry- crush over and even question why you are there. A story of 6 friends who became family and their bond will make you relate to your friends. Maybe- maybe not we all have that one Monica in our life who loves to clean and cook and gives their shoulder when we need it the most, Phoebe with whom we can do the weird stuffs, friendship like Chandler and Joey who gave us the reason to believe in boy friendships. This series is technically everything we want to have and we want to see.

It can be a 5 page article and still not be enough why we love this gem show but all we know is we cannot be bored of watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S ever.

6. Spiritual Capital of Odisha – Puri

According to Hindu belief, the four sites of pilgrimage are the abode of the Gods, and a visit to the Chaar Dham will wash away all sins. One of them is Puri, the residence of an avatar of Lord Vishnu, Lord Jagannath along with his wife Goddess Laxmi, his siblings; Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. Divinity can be felt in the air, once one enters the vicinity of Puri. The smell of abadha, the tinkling of bells and troops of Puri Pandas, build up ethereal vibes in the city. All these factors clubbed together, make Puri the Spiritual Capital of Odisha.

7. Steel City of Odisha – Rourkela

Rourkela, having an abundance of iron ore, is the home ground of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), the first integrated steel plant in the public sector in India. It has a Big Core Sector in the case of Steel, heavy blast furnace, etc., which laid the foundation stone of industries like Larsen & Toubro Fabrication Plant in Kansbahal and more. Consequently, getting the nickname, “The Steel City of Odisha”.

8. Diamond City – Sambalpur

Be it the mentions of ancient Roman scholar, Cladius Ptolemy’s “Sambalaka” or the British historian, Edward Gibbon’s “Sumelpur” in their books, all the centuries old references point to Sambalpur. The gravel bed of Hirakud, in Sambalpur, contained the precious diamonds. A great diamond trade followed the resource treasured in this district, which is therefore called the Diamond City.

9. Bhata Handi of Odisha – Bargarh

Rice, the staple food of Odisha, is abundantly produced in Bargarh. Owing to the geographical location of this city, it gets a lot of water. Thus, making it suitable to grow Paddy, which is the crop that requires a great amount of water. “Bhata Handi” , translating to “Rice Bowl”, gets its name due to the large production of rice in the farmlands of Bargarh.

10. Kashmir of Odisha – Daringbadi

Snow-capped mountains and chilled atmosphere, sometimes dropping below 0 degrees Celsius, Daringbadi, is indeed a replica of Kashmir in Odisha. Situated at an altitude of 915 metres, this city captivates tourists worldwide for its picturesque scenery.

10 Underrated Odia Festivals and Their Importance

Connecting to the Roots – Odia Festivals

Twelve months fall short for more than thirteen festivals that are celebrated in the state. Odisha, India’s best kept secret, indeed hides a rich culture and tradition. The whole year is filled with a grand gala of events embellished with merrymaking and savoury dishes. Few of the festivities satisfy the scientific reasonings, while some others are purely based on beliefs, and many of them emancipate from the cliched ideologies of society. Let us recapitulate ten such ceremonies that connect us to the roots of our culture and should never be forgotten.

1. Khudurukuni Osha

The Odia festivals that celebrates the bond between brother and sister, revolves around a girl named “Tapoi” who worshipped Goddess Mangala with the minimal offerings she could afford. She belonged to a family of traders, and after her brothers went for trading, she was ill-treated by her sisters-in-law, except the youngest one. Dwindling in hassle, in tatters, amidst the forest filled with wild creatures, the lonely girl prayed to Maa Mangala for the safe return of her brothers, who treated her like a princess. On returning from business her brothers avenged the culprits by cutting their noses and rewarded only her youngest sister-in-law.

Since that time women have fasted, decorated the deity of Maa Mangala and performed various rituals for the well-being of their brothers on the Sundays of Bhadraba (August-September), after the Gahma Purnima (Full moon day of Shravana).

2. Pana Sankranti

The new year of the Odia calendar begins on this day marking the beginning of summer. It is also known as Mesa Sankranti or Maha Vishubha Sankranti celebrated in the month of Baisakh (April-May). A special sweet drink is made on this auspicious occasion with wood apple (Bela in odia) as the hero and other fruits, pepper, coconut gratings etc. seasoned lusciously. This reflects the benevolence of Odias as Pana, the energy drink is prepared in every house and distributed to neighbors, acquaintances and people nearby, in order to pacify the thirst at the onset of summer.

3. Chitalagi Amavasya

On the new moon day of Shravan ( July-August) month, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra are decorated with golden “Chita” consisting of rubies, emeralds and other precious stones. The Trinity is offered “Chitou Pitha”, which is also made in every household in Odisha.

According to a belief, the girls in farmers’ homes offer “Chitou Pitha” to snails in the farmlands, and chant a prayer, asking them not to hurt the feet of their brothers and fathers.

4. Bata Osha

A day in the month of Pousha ( December-January ), in which women worship Lord Yama, the God of Death and Dharma, to protect their children and husbands whenever they travel. Fasting and rituals of sweeping the road are performed to please the Lord.

5. Dhanu Sankranti

The significance of Dhanu Sankranti lies in celebrating the toil and harvest of farmers, after the gathering phase. A special sweet dish, made up of flattened rice or puffed rice, sugar syrup and other dry fruits is offered to Lord Jagannath on this day.

World’s largest open-air theatre in Bargarh, holding the Guiness Book of World Records, Dhanu Yatra is an 11-day long enactment of the tale of victory over Krishna’s evil uncle Kansa, held during this period, in the month of Pousha.

6. Kartika Purnima

“Aa ka ma boi, pana gua thoi, pana gua tora, masaka dharma mora”, the song that every odia sings on Kartika Purnima, while sailing mini boats in water bodies to commemorate the glory of ancestral maritime trade.

This festivals is roistered after a “no non-veg” kartika month in Odisha. Apart from the belief in acquiring dharma by not killing and eating animals, there is a scientific reason behind the ritual. Kartika month is the period of transition from rainy to winter season, in which fish suffer from chickenpox and the digestion power of humans is weak. So, humans take more days to digest non-veg than vegetarian food. Also, during this phase the poultry animals and goats undergo the process of reproduction. Consumption of non-veg in this breeding season might transmit diseases into the human body.

7. Manabasa Gurubaar

On Thursdays of the month of Margashira (November-December), the deity of Goddess Laxmi is decorated with flowers and the house with alpana designs, to welcome the Goddess of wealth and bless the family with prosperity.

This month signifies the breaking of the age-old stereotype of untouchability, as Goddess Laxmi is believed to travel to every household irrespective of caste and creed. A book known as Laxmi Purana, which retells the story of Laxmi breaking the rule of untouchability, is read on the very day and other rituals are performed by women wrapped in white-red sarees.

8. Kumar Purnima

It is on this occasion that the unmarried girls pray for a bridegroom like Kumar or Kartikeya, the most eligible and handsome God, also known as the God of War. It occurs on the full moon day of Ashwina month. The young and unmarried girls worship the Sun in early morning and the Moon at night, wishing to get a husband as good-looking as the moon. A special delicacy, called “Chanda Chakata” is prepared in the shape of a half moon and offered to the moon God while performing the rituals.

9. Raja Parba

Beautifully decorated swings, special Raja Paan and a variety of food items mark this occasion. The odia festivals that is celebrated with great pomp and show, glorifying womanhood. The word “Raja” is derived from the word “Rajaswala”, meaning menstruating woman. Farmers don’t go to farms and it is advised to not hurt the mother earth in any way, as she is believed to undergo menstruation.

This 4-day long period honours women and rejects the stereotype that menstrual cycle makes a woman impure. Thus, freeing women from all household works and letting them enjoy wearing new clothes, and eating mouthwatering food.

10.Samba Dasami

Legends of Samba Dasami revolve around the son of Lord Krishna, Samba, who was afflicted by Leprosy. After 12 years of self-punishment in the Konark Temple, on this day he got rid of the illness. Thus, in the month of Pousha, the Sun God is offered with bhoga and many rituals are performed to get his blessings. The women cook different dishes and offer the Sun God, anticipating the good health of their children.(odia festivals)
