India’s coronavirus statistics have reached a frightening tally of over 4 lakh cases each day. In a grim situation like this, Adar Poonawala- CEO of serum institute claimed that he flew to London before Britain banned travellers from India because of threats demanding vaccines.
Poonawalla is the chief executive officer of the Serum Institute, which is the local maker of the coronavirus vaccine developed by Oxford University and pharmaceuticals company AstraZeneca. “Everything falls on my shoulders but I can’t do it alone,” he said about the alleged threats in an interview with times.
“I don’t want to be in a situation where you are just trying to do your job, and just because you can’t supply the needs of X, Y or Z you really don’t want to guess what they are going to do.” He further adds. “The level of expectation and aggression is really unprecedented,” Poonawalla said. “It’s overwhelming. Everyone feels they should get the vaccine. They can’t understand why anyone else should get it before them.”
The centre has since assured Poonawala Y category security cover across India and issued orders after conducting a detailed threat assessment.
Poonawala is now said to return to India from London in a few days. He has confirmed this in a midnight tweet that says,” Had an excellent meeting with all our partners & stakeholders in the UK. Meanwhile, pleased to state that Covishiled’s production is in full swing in Pune. I look forward to reviewing operations upon my return in a few days.”
