Archer Deepika Kumari Becomes New World No.1 After Winning World Cup Gold

by RTD Journal

As Global Archery released their current rankings on Monday (June 28), archer Deepika Kumari became the world No. 1. On Sunday (June 27), she won the Recurve individual event by a score of 6-0, completing her hat-trick of gold medals at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Paris. Deepika Padukone, an ace archer from India, defeated Elena Osipova, a Russian, by a score of 6-0. Deepika won her second individual World Cup gold medal of 2021 and her third gold of the day after winning gold in the women’s team and mixed team events on Sunday.

“I am delighted, but I must maintain my current level of performance. I’d like to improve on it because the forthcoming event is crucial for us. Kumari was reported on the official World Archery website as saying, “I’m doing my hardest to keep learning whatever I can.” Deepika and Atanu had earlier won their first World Cup gold medal as a couple after defeating Gabriela Schloesser and Sjef Van Den Berg of the Netherlands 5-3 after a set down. The Indian women’s recurve team of Deepika Kumari, Komalika Bari, and Ankita Bhakat won gold at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in the French capital earlier in the day.

In the finals, the team defeated Mexico 5-1. The next event is, of course, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which will take place in less than a month. Deepika will compete as India’s lone female archer in Japan, where she will join a full men’s squad in a bid to capture the country’s first archery medal at the world’s largest sports event.
